Great picks Syntax

There's got to be a place in there for Michael Spinks though.

You have to have Mike Tyson in there. In the mid to late 80's he was the man. :TU: Inspite of what has happened since. In his prime he was IT! :box:

In his prime, Marvelous Marvin looked more unbeatable than Iron Mike.

That's true.

It's so hard when you compile these lists, but M Spinks is definitely one worth considering. :TU:

Most likely. If you include his accomplishments from the seventies I might have included him over Jones. But going by the criteria of this topic, I believe Jones edges him.

u must be kidding me. i wouldnt even rank coetzee over mike weaver. mike tyson should be the next heavyweight on the list, hes far better than coetzee could ever dream of being.

the fact that u put coetzee over whitaker and JCC is laughable

My top 5 is Hagler, Leonard, Jones, Holmes & Whittaker. I dont think Nelson quite makes the top 5, probably would top 10, but he isnt a fighter to be sneered at.

Actually you have a point about Tyson, Ill put Tyson 4th, and Coetzee and Pryor tied 5th.

WTF is Coetzee doing in a lb 4 lb list? Is he in the top 5 South African heavyweights since 1980, or is it your Razor sharp wit at work?

I'm not sneering at Nelson, but Jones and Holmes are just a half-step better. The thing I hate about topics like these is how to rank someone like Hagler, who did a lot of his best work before 1980.
My problem with Roy Jones, although he is probably the most gifted boxer in the history of the sport, he did not fight a lot of his main contemporaries. Now, that may be his not his fault, but it does affect his overall standing.

Also, when he started to fade a little, never adapted to his deteriorating skills, he just got sparked out, which again is a minus point.

Larry Holmes is definitely worth considering, but I am biased, as I am a big Nelson fan! :box:

There are certain names that really have to be on there.

Hagler - had some great fights in the 1970s but on his title record alone must be in there.

Leonard - the talent and the resume.

Whittaker - beat just about everyone apart from a dodgy decision or 2.

Chavez - Can anyone really leave this guy out.

Spinks - made hsitory when beating Holmes and had already done a lot at Light heavy

Holmes - one of the greatest HW's of all-time

Hang on that's 6.... :x

Come to think of it, im not sure whether Roy Jones should be in the list over Tommy Hearns, i probably picked him cos he was widely perceived to be the best fighter of the 90s, and his overall talent level. He did get sparked in his 2 last fights and I wouldnt be surprised if Clinton Woods KOs him if he comes back. Prime for prime Hearns vs Jones at MW would be a great match up
