Boxing returning to ITV.....maybe

Post by Old bones Ian »

Just seen a report the ITV are close to announcing a deal to broadcast up to 20 shows a year, split between ITV and ITV4.
Al Haymon is one of the guys behind it, so obviously nothing being discussed in public.

Hopefully it'll come to fruition as some of us don't have Sky etc.

Excellent news.

The Frampton deal with ITV wasn't long lived.
Was always going to be difficult for them to keep airing his fights once he got the big fights he was after.
Although, he has worked with PBC as well so he may return to ITV

Must be worrying news for Eddie could well lose Degale ,Selby ,McDonnell now there contracted to Al Haymon , he's not going to let them appear on Sky you would have thought if this is true .

I just want decent fights to be honest if it's Degale Selby when they are 1/100 like a good portion of PBC stuff I'm not interested, and part of that reasoning is that whilst normal Sky was dire last year what's been announced so far is actually pretty good IMO

Another reason I'm sceptical is the PBC investment value is plummeting and I'm not convinced it will exist at the end of the year.

My point it's not just any boxing on terrestrial TV it's compettive fights in terrestrial TV we need.

As much as I would be loathe to even believe the dateline from this rag, here is a story on it

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/boxing ... -deal.html

Fast Car said that he welcomed the news (of course he did, that fukker is smooth and too good to show true thoughts or concerns) but added: "The carrot of being on Sky Sports is ultimately ending up on pay-per-view. There is no other channel that can compete on that model. But I think in time you will see other pay-per-view outlets, whether that's BT, ITV, who knows? It's a difficult model.
'It's not just a model you jump into where you say 'we are going to do a pay-per-view fight'. Where's your infrastructure? Where are your call centres? Where is your marketing campaign? Where are the platforms to cross promote? We will see.'

He is such an utter fcking pudendum. Full of self importance and thinks he is the fcking alpha promoter, social media expert, marketing genius, I want to see him wiped out to be honest and if this comes to fruition, he could be in real danger. The shite he has been serving up will be exposed. He should re-read the article, they mention setting up a pay per view outlet. Pull it all together long term and any fighter would surely prefer to sign up with someone promoting on ITV, which will see Hearn trying to move his stable from Sky in 5 years I bet

The guys a leech. In his mind the only way boxing can move forward in Britain is by continually churning out sh1te match ups with as many ppvs as he can possibly muster.

Eddie is just acting like all promoters holding most of the aces usually do. He hasn't invented anything in the game, he know that only too well. He is'nt revolutionising anything, he's just tredding the same path others have done before him.

His time will come to an end. What if Fury beats Joshua? Fury don't work for paymasters and seems to actively dislike Hearn. I'd love to see Fury somehow agree the Klit rematch for ITV

As long as none of them go to Haymon this should be good, be interesting to see who gets them.

Great news if it happens. With Matchroom shows seemingly drying up and all the halfway decent shows going straight to PPV and allegedly allegedly having financial issues this would be just what the sport needs.

Are those new financial issues or the ones that have been rumoured for a while ? Just curious. They must have banked a lot of dosh over the past three months, for minimal output on the channel. I used to moan but if it means they can reduce the debts and keep going, fair enough, especially compared to dick Turpin over on sky.

Same issues I think, nothing new's been mentioned recently.

Hadn't really thought about it, but if this is true about ITV, and I'm not sure it is, could it be the end of BN? If ITV are prepared to put some money into boxing and he can get 20 dates a year on terrestrial TV, with the possibility of PPV, and the deal is long enough to make it worthwhile, would he take it?

Would obviously mean the time and money spent on the channel going down the drain, but it would be a massive game changer for them and boxing in general. Realistically there's only him and Hearn that could take up the dates with their current stables and Hearn's tied down with Sky for the next 5 years. All of a sudden they could have the financial backing to match Hearn, better exposure and still have PPV available, be crazy not to take it. And an ITV PPV channel would mean that the usual arguments against terrestrial TV getting involved in boxing, that they'll build fighters up only for them to run off to other channels to get on PPV, would be redundant.

I had assumed that haymon was simply looking for someone to buy up a years worth of his American product. He does all those shows, some of them get picked up by BN, some by Sky, and some turn up on spike. It makes sense to haymon to sell a job lot to one buyer - for the right price of course, instead of loads of different deals and sometimes not selling some shows to the uk market at all. For itv, they get top level boxing consistently and from a reliable source.

The way the article's written it suggests that they're for domestic shows. Can't see ITV being interested in fights being shown in the early hours of the morning, surely wouldn't be worth it with the low viewing figures they'd get. Haymon might be interested in either buying up the TV dates or being given them, but he doesn't really have the stable to put shows on in the UK and more or less every fighter worth putting on is under contract to a promoter. Hopefully he doesn't get them anyway, sooner he fucks off the better, shouldn't be long with the money they're losing.

Haye got 3m on Dave, ITV would up these numbers for a 1 hour time slot. ITV4 for his undercard, then over to ITV1 for the main event.
Could they be in for his next fight?

That's an interesting point. I wonder how many boxers in the UK aren't tied down long term to a specific broadcast deal with SKY, B0xnati0n or Channel 5? Here's the ones that spring to my mind:

1. David Haye
2. Tyson Fury
3. Amir Khan
4. Carl Frampton
5. George Groves
6. David Price
7. Anthony Ogogo
8. Andy Lee (Okay he's Irish)
9. Dereck Chisora

There's enough talent there to give each fighter 2 or 3 dates each, potentially in main event slots, to fulfill 20 shows per year. Various level events like British, European and World. Also after the Olympics there's going to be British & Irish fighters turning pro who could gravitate to ITV to beef out the undercards.

The reality is Hearn is correct.

There's only so much revenue that a Mitsibishi advert for their L200 pick-up truck can generate for terrestrial stations.

Without a facility to charge people, they've no way of putting on the marquee event. It's all and good posting 2m viewers - but if each viewer paid 0p to watch it then it's of little benefit. Unless it's part of the approach to get a fighter well known stick them on sky box office when the big fight happens (if they get there).

500k PPV buys is £7,500,000 which is an absolute fortune.

The wildcard in all this is Alex Balfour, a multi-media powerhouse who delivered the olympics and has built Premier Boxing Champions into a marketing monster. He's a Londoner and can make things happen in a very big way. He was Haymon's top target and first employee I believe.

if Haye can generate 3m views fighting a bum on Dave then there has to be some money in it.
ITV primetime on a Saturday night, I would imagine, would generate decent ad revenue. Not as much as Sky but still decent money, plus ITV can offer other opportunities for appearances to grow a fighters profile.
I was always surprised Mick Hennessey never got any of his fighters on Big Brother through his deal with Channel 5, seemed like an easy profile builder for his guys...

Would it have attracted 3m if people were expected to pay £16.95 for it. Audley was twenty times the fight and people remember how that went - and sky remember the backlash as it killed PPV for a while.

I'm guessing here, but I reckon the huge delay in announcing the broadcaster was down to different ways being explored how they could charge people for De Mori - but it drew a blank. It was that late in the day, that it was going to go on YouTube then in stepped Dave whom offered to carry it I imagine.

For a show to go on PPV you need either a massive headliner, world title and if you've neither of those ingredients then you need 4 or 5 solid trade fights with belts in play. And to deliver that kind of show you need to have several million to put it together - and historically terrestrial TV has never put their hand in their pockets to make events happen. They are happy to put on a couple of domestic names against cheap opponents, or pick up dirt-cheap rights to shows that others have disregarded... But 'funding' their own huge fights has not happened for decades and I don't see it ever changing.

I agree, unless ITV put in millions which I cant see them doing they wont ever get huge PPV level fights, no doubt. But also don't think ITV are going to jump in at that level.
I imagine they have seen the numbers a small channel like DAVE has attracted and believe they can attract much bigger numbers on their platform.
Alevel vs. Alevel, no, but that doesn't mean they can't have a-side guys like Haye, Fury, Khan vs. bums and still attract big numbers as Haye vs. De Mori has already shown...
