Yes. He didn't though so he is what he is.

He certainly would have had an ever greater career had he not had his local takeaway on speed dial & he had had the ability to close his fridge door once in a while.

It just goes to show what level of skill he did have in that he managed to achieve what he did, despite looking like the Nutty Professor for most of his career.

I don't make a habit of giving fighters sh*t though for fighting on too long anymore. It's easy to criticize from the outside looking in, but these guys mostly have only ever made a living one way through Boxing. What are they supposed to do with the rest of their lives?

I can see it more if it's a guy like Roy Jones or somebody who has an HBO commentator job just waiting for them, which should be enough for the guy to make a living without getting his head bashed in any further, but for a guy like Toney. There's really not much else out there for the guy.

It never ceases to me amaze me how little many hardcore online boxing fans fail to understand different fighters ...differing reasons for fighting on....

Jones and toney in their differering way are NOT guys who " have only ever made a living through boxing" and need to wonder what they are supposed to do with the rest of their lives.....neither do they absolutely need the money........Jones fights on for his love of the game,his love of actually engaging in a fight...no matter what level it is.....(and he has sunk so far in terms of levels from the stratosphere he held for 15 years)....Jones has plenty of interests outside boxing,a mansion ,kids, and a well paid commentating job awaiting him....

Toney came from a middle class background and helped his mom run her chain of bakeries (they are still operating)....toney could run and invest in those if he chose...there is plenty out there for him....but a guy like toney who has been a world champ boxer....does he have any interest in a 9 to 5 office based job.....or running a bakery? (Actually the 2nd one he may .primarily he has fought on as he prefers to train and "work" one day in 6 months and get paid than....the rest of the time he will enjoy his clothes,cars ,family and status......yes he too has fallen but not really cos he was desperate for money but rather he loves the game of boxing and he realised right till this,advanced time in his career that $50,000 here and there is still good going for one days work

One could only imagine what Toney would look like had he gone into the bakery business as opposed to boxing.

Let's not go overboard. He will deservedly make into the IBHOF, but on his beat day he was beatable. He's not even close to being a top 20 Middleweight of alltime.
