Danny Macalindonv Jack Bodell
Can any of you boys remember that fateful night when danny boy carring lightning in both hands gave the big birminham open air crowd a wonderful night with danny`s typical 2 fisted action...how i wish we had a crowd pleaser like that around now.

I remember that wild, brawl quite well. McAlinden and Bodell didn't even try and show the most basic points of the sweet science and just went for each other like two drunken baroom brawlers arguing over a busty blonde.tigerpomfret wrote:Can any of you boys remember that fateful night when danny boy carring lightning in both hands gave the big birminham open air crowd a wonderful night with danny`s typical 2 fisted action...how i wish we had a crowd pleaser like that around now.
A few years after retiring there was a lot of talk of McAlinden fighting the Lenny McClean in an unlicenced fight but it remained just talk. I understand McAlinden still lives in Coventry and sometimes helps out at his local amateur gym.
Interesting to note McAlinden beat Muhammad Alis brother over 6 rounds on the undercard of 'The Fight'.
Danny McAlinden vs Matt Skelton anyone?

Roy 'Prettyboy' Shaw is still very much alive. I saw a documentary on him about 18 months ago called Hard B@stards. Even though he is 70 this year, he still trains 3/4 times a week and looks a handfull. He also still has those cold killer shark eyes.
Right up untill McClean was diagnosed with terminal lung and brain cancer Shaw was still calling him out for a bare-knuckle rematch.

i remember the MCALLINDEN V BODELL fight very well. MACCA was his usual crazed swinging with everything self but bodell looked out of it and jaded and not quite the ticket from the off. there was only gonna be one winner from the first bell. and bodell wasnt that bad earlier in his career.
does anyone remember Wokings Joe Awome? brown bread now, sad to say, but after cooper and with bugner content to dominate the european scene, british champions then were a very odd bunch indeed. i also remember john contehs camp saying they wanted to get bugner in the ring!!

I remember Awome. In fact i have one of his fights on DVD. The rematch with Ron McLean. Didn't Awome win a gold at the Commonwealth Games or something? How did he die?harrygreb wrote:i remember the MCALLINDEN V BODELL fight very well. awesom, wasn`t he that totally useless guy,a few tried to bum up ,as usual, said he was a good orospect ..what a joke ...rememberJohn l Garner..remember jokers sayoing he was the new Rocky...and to be honest ,he had a good looking record on papere, till that yank sailor came over throwing bombs, and knocked garner out.
It's the sort of thing that would be on 'what happened next?'. But it was most definitely Manny Gabriel .......... Malpass is somewhat lighter skinnedmercman wrote:Isn't that the clip that was shown on 'A Question of Sport' as a 'what happened next' scenario? If so I always thought that it was Awome v Neil Malpass the Central Area Champion.Remember him crashing out of the ring tangled up with Manny Gabriel

awome was orthodox come-forward puncher with a bit of power, poor balance (which might explain falling out the ring that time) easy to hit. good looking lad (always useful in the british ranks!!). but the boxrec records do not say he was british champ which my fading memory says he was. perhaps i think so because the BBC seemed to follow his progress all the time.
does anyone know?
