Least known UK/Irish world champs
I bet there's plenty of British/Irish fighters who've been world champs who are basically forgotten about
I'll start with Murray Sutherland

Paul Silky Jones. I got this question right on BN once and was over the moon when they read out the answer (buncey's pick), then they read out someone else's name.

Glen catley and Chris pyatt

remember Catley starching a German fella really late in a fight he'd lost every round until the bomb landed.littlepug wrote:Glen catley and Chris pyatt

Earned that title shot with a 12th round stoppage, won the title by 12th round stoppage, then lost the title by 12th round stoppage in his first defense.rd350lc wrote:remember Catley starching a German fella really late in a fight he'd lost every round until the bomb landed.littlepug wrote:Glen catley and Chris pyatt

Clinton Woods. A few successful defences of his lightheavyweight title and he's become almost unknown. Fought Jones Jr in his pomp too.
Re: Least known UK/Irish world champs
A fighter before my time, but how many fighters can say they won a version of the title at their weight and then lost the British title in their next fight! What on earth happened there?mickey1975 wrote:Paul Silky Jones. Jones was supposed to of gone straight into a mandatory defense against Bronco McKart, but Jones wasn't happy with the purse offered and the WBO stripped him of the title.SNG wrote:A fighter before my time, but how many fighters can say they won a version of the title at their weight and then lost the British title in their next fight! Mark prince?
People never seem to count alex arthur as a genuine champ. Gavin rees is also more remembered for domestic achievements

Henry Akinwande, WBO world heavyweight champion.
Barry Jones, WBO super featherweight champion, although Barry is now a star of BN.

Re: Least known UK/Irish world champs
Javid khaliq defended Ibo title 7 times, then retired cause of poor promotion and little pay. Was rated in top 10 welterweight by ring magazine.
He was called out by verrron forest after he beat Shane Mosley. He was a cabbi while fighting pro just to support his family. He use to get paied more by being a cabbi then to fight
.
He owns his own gym now, there also a artical on how he came in a gym and carl frotch saw his title and that motivated him. He also became pro at 27 so he was getting older retired around 2005. Just before amir khan came to the scene, most people think amir khan was the first British pakistani champion.
I think most people never even heard of this guy lol so there for I win

Everyone on here know about his career and he was on Sky god knows how many times. Mismanaged, maybe, but not unknown.kashmir786 wrote:Javid khaliq defended Ibo title 7 times, then retired cause of poor promotion and little pay. Was rated in top 10 welterweight by ring magazine.

Gogaladze was never a world title fight. I was an Arthur fan before his head went huge but I just cant think of him as a world champion.

Always wanted to see Jawaid against Sinclair. I remember those three of Sinky, Hare and Jawaid, and they never fought each other....real shamekashmir786 wrote:Javid khaliq defended Ibo title 7 times, then retired cause of poor promotion and little pay. Re: Least known UK/Irish world champs
Barry Jones (before he became a commentator.) there are so very good calls on this thread though.....
Michael Bentt (very dodgy Brit)
Paul Weir (maybe not so much in Scotland)
Nicky Cook (couldn't even remember he was a 'world champ')
Murray Sutherland is interesting one
Jason Mathews... Apart from spectacularly bombing out Rhodes
Akinwande
