GENE TUNNEY VS EZZARD CHARLES...

Post by silkov »

Who would win this?. I find this a very intriguing match up... Gene is very underrated (as is Charles) I think Tunney had the edge in foot speed and Charles the edge in power... this could go either way but I think I'd edge towards Tunney winning a close decision by out manuvering Charles... views anyone?... :box:

charles 15 close unanimous decision. I think charles had slightly better boxing skills, and was far more fluid and smooth than tunney.

I'd lean towards Ezzard, but agree Tunney was under-rated. Just feel Ezz had that bit more variety.

At what weight? Charles was 33-20 as a hw and Tunney had only a few fights at that weight. Both were very sharp punchers who scored many kos; neither was a power hitter. Both were more than solid in every aspect of the game; they certainly had mastered theri "ABCs"
I think tunney's movement would trouble Charles, and think Charles would have an edge fighting up close. I honestly hven't seen enough of either to really know for sure. I'll venture to say it goes the distance and is close.

Two great boxers but I have to go with Charles.

Charles fought just about anyone who would sign him. His competition encompassed everyone not just white fighters. He also stayed at HW longer and took on a lot more talent than Gene.

They were both superbly conditioned fighters with great defences. Ezzard had more speed and power. Tunney had a better chin and was less prone to trading shots wit heavier hitters.

It's a UD for Ezzard but I do think Tunney is the most underrated HW champion.
