Movie charactor actors who were once boxers
But not champions. can anyone name a few ?
I was watching the movie LITTLE CAESAR (with Edward G. Robinson )the other night,
and there was one actor (with a broken nosethat )I had seen in a number of other films from the 1930's.
His name was Stanley Fields and was said to have been once a professional boxer.
anyone have any additional info ?

Re: Movie charactor actors who were once boxers
I read somewhere that he was a lightweight boxer and retired after he was knocked out by Benny Leonard
However IMDB lists his height at 6 ft 1"
which would have been really tall for a lightweight.
(you can see what Stanley Fields looked like at about 33 seconds into this clip.)

Re: Movie charactor actors who were once boxers
according to an interview,Dean Martin (born Dino Paul Crocetti)
had about 35 professional bouts as a welterweight under the name "Kid Crochet"
back in his home town of Stuebenville Ohio back in the mid-1930's.
He had fought for two years
lost about 5 times, had his nose broken 14 times also his hands and fingers were broken numerous times too.
His top purse was just 35 dollars so he left to work as a coupier.

I had always thought so too based on his nose on the television show POLICEWOMAN.orbtastic wrote:Charles Dierkop had to have boxed at some point.
I also remember seeing him in an episode of BONANZA from 1970,
where he was ploughing a field without his shirt,
and had what looked like the upper body physique of a trained professional middleweight fighter from the 1950's.
However I never could find of any mention anywhere of him ever putting on a pair of gloves.
Perhaps he had fought under another name ?

Robert Conrad had four or five fights as a MW before his "Wild Wild West" fame.
Tom Kennedy did a ton of stuff, including working with the Marx Brothers, Laurel and Hardy, and the Three Stooges. He fought some pretty good guys like Al Palzer and Bombardier Billy Wells.
Pat Comiskey was in a bunch of films too.
