Quigg himself said he threw the fifth round away see how it was effecting his jaw but he had no pain there

whether his jaw was broken or not is irrelevant, as i dont understand why quigg would try and use it to excuse a lacklustre performance. it was damage caused by a legit punch. its basically the same as saying "he landed a hard punch to the head that caused enough damage to effect me the for the rest of the fight" sort of the point of the sport last i checked

My point was just simply that there was no proof that the jaw was broken (seems now though that it had been). I do not think I made a comment on whether it affected the fight or the outcome or anything which you are saying here. Just simply clarifying whether it was broken or not.

youve missed my point mate. what im trying to get at is, i dont know why quigg would lie about it, its the same as saying " he hurt me with a punch in round four, and i was hurt the rest of the fight ". claiming you couldnt fight properly because of a broken jaw caused by a punch is like claiming you couldnt fight properly because your opponent knocked you down in every round. if he's thinking the broken jaw defence somehow exonerates him, its a peculiar way of thinking to say the least

I do get your point, I think. But as for "why would Quigg lie about it?" - I did not suggest that, just how would he know it is broken in a post fight interview? It may hurt like a motherfucker, but that does not mean it is broken (it may have later shown to have been broken, but it can just as easily been shown not to be)

His coach was giving him terrible advice again. Gallagher deserves more blame than Quigg.

Although Quigg should have ignored him and has to take his fair share of the blame.
I rarely agree with you horse but this I do agree with,

I genuinely believe he was following his trainers plan and at the end of the day it didn't work. Quigg was as shocked as anyone when he was told he was down which says to me he was just following orders and thinking he was doing ok.

Yes he should have known it himself but when everything in the past has gone pretty much to plan I think he was just doing exactly what he was told in the hope that his trainer had it right (ie following the plan)

He reminds me of someone who would excel in the army, follows orders to the tee and doesn't deviate at all.

I think Gallagher should feel responsible for the fight in the main, though of course Quigg could have gone against him at any time.

I also think he would win if they fought again, if only, if only, he would have done more in the first half of the fight...Gallagher should have seen the fight ebbing away from them but he didn't.

At the end of the day they got it wrong, Quigg was never troubled in the fight (AND he had a broken jaw) yet he still didn't win.

I feel a bit sorry for him if I'm honest, its a fight he could have won.

Also got to say I was impressed with how Frampton took some big shots without being in any sort of trouble himself and i still don't see Quigg winning a rematch if it got made as much as I like the lad .

Joe does come across quite arrogant i know but i think people are being blinded by his hatred for him and seem to think Quigg's exempt from any blame, cant remember seeing the trainer take the brunt as much as Joe is here

I was 1 of the ones who said Joe and Scott would never make the same mistake as the Salinas fight and TBF they did but surely Scott should know to win fights you need to throw punches, seems to me BOTH guys are at fault but especially Quigg, trainers can only do so much

Any "nice" trainer recieved this kind of flack for their fighters freezing??

Although i will admit Gallagher telling Quigg everythings fine is ludicrous

No other trainer has ever done such a bad job as Joe Gallagher.

I'm surprised people think he froze, he was making Frampton miss very well at times and was clearly looking for shots, he was just looking to load up on everything. He did the same against Kiko, he just landed the big shot, had he done the same against Frampton he would have opened up.

Not doing anything isn't the same as freezing.

Quigg was following Gallagher's dotty plan.

I think there is a little too much trainer bashing here,a lot of which is through the prism of already disliking him.

Far too much is made of the trainer being some kind of NFL head coach who directs plays and is effectively treating the fight like a chess match.

Quigg didn't through anything meanful in rounds 1-5. He is a man who, by his own admission, lives for boxing. How could he possibly think he was winning rounds?

A great trainer can give you marginal edges in a fight. If you choose to do nothing in your in your self proclaimed "fight of your life", I think the mirror gives you the best answer to your defeat.

I'm not all for bashing Gallagher either, but he should have been able to recognise that Quigg was letting rounds drift away and have given him the right advice by at least round four. If he had have started to push Frampton back and land the shots he did later it would have been a very intersting right, although he did break his jaw in the fourth so who knows?

It's not about him being unlikeable.

It's about him having one of the worst gameplans in boxing history... again!

Gallagher was trying to be the NFL style chessmaster and he failed miserably.

Because his loony trainer told him so.

Name another trainer who has ever had such a bad gameplan as Gallagher?

Horse - we don't actually disagree, but I'd just expect an elite fighter to recognise himself that he's losing rounds

yeah , he hardly threw a jab all fight and like you said was loading up so badly he took a massive air shot at one point , expected more bodywork to be honest , but maybe that was down to Frampton's early evasiveness.

The lack of the jab was shocking, I remember shouting when he finally threw one. I was impressed with how evasive he was at times, he made Frampton miss well at times, and made him throw one or two massive air shots.

The early rounds were close though and if his trainer says that he's doing enough then it's understandable how Quigg was fooled. He shouldn't have been fooled, but I'm not shocked that he was.

Can anyone think of a worse boxing gameplan than Gallagher's?

Is it the all time worst plan?

There was that moment between rounds, after rd 3 I think, where Gallagher was saying how 'we know his feet will go stationary and his head will come up', etc, and i think that's at the root of a lot of the criticism.

It seems Gallagher not for the first time decided he had 'seen' something in an opponent, and his complacency that his peerless analysis would ultimately turn out to be correct, seems to be why he stuck to the 'gameplan', and fly in the face of the evidence in the ring, where round after round Framptons feet weren't going static and his head wasn't coming up.

I think it was obvious from that that the 'gameplan' was, that it wouldn't matter if quigg did lose early rounds as the flaws that only the piercing intellect and searching eye of Joe Gallagher had managed to discern would ultimately show themselves

Risky 'gameplan' to say the least......

For me part of being a great training is being able to read fights and to give accurate advice, I'm not saying Gallagher isn't capable but perhaps he needs to be more flexible, Frampton did eventually tire, but of course he was going too, but he needs to read fights better at this level. Lower levels Quigg would have gotten the guy out of there but it's just not good enough when you fight the top guys.

Hey, sometimes it has worked.

John Watson and Andy Morris did indeed end up gassing against Crolla.

And, ummmm,.......
