Fritzie Zivic in 2006.

Post by Expug »

What would Zivic do against todays crop of fighters? Would he be D.O d every time out? Would he show modern day fighters tricks they never imagined? Would he be banned in every state? One thing for sure it would be interesting. There is nobody in modern Boxing like this guy. There was a time in boxing when a prospect would eventually have to fight a guy like Zivic to learn his trade. It was sink or swim. Either the fighter came away with a real education that he could use,or he came away ruined. Boxing is not like this anymore. Its all about the undefeated record not learning the trade.

>>>Yeah, I can't stand the way guys actually learn how to fight in the gym these days.<<<

Yeah right! But hearing that from you is rather funny since you once said that sparring didn't mean shit and was basically a waste of time. Sounds like you are singing a different tune here in this thread as sparring is all that boxers of today do and when they do get in the ring with someone who is actually trying to take their head off, they choke because all they are use to is completely dominating some sparring partner that is getting paid to take a beating...that really "teaches" a fighter his trade!

Sparring is a very important part of a fighters training. But the things that a fighter would have to endure in a fight with Zivic are not things that he usally would see in a sparring session. Guys who train together and spar regularly are not usally sticking thumbs in each others eyes, lacing each other, throwin elbows, hookin to the balls, intentionaly headbutting(headgear anyway) there are "accidents"on occasion and sometimes intense rivalries in the gym ,but MOST of the time its usally pretty clean. THats why the only way to learn how to deal with a fighter like Fritzie,is to take him on for real. You can only learn so much in the gym. Eventualy you gotta step up.

In Zivic you are talking about a guy that beat Armtrong 2 of 3, fought two very close and competitive fights with Ray Robinson, and, outweighed by 15 or more pounds, fought LaMotta to 5 very close decision, winning one, a couple of the others splitting. He fought Beau Jack twice and I've read accounts that had him winning both fights- rather, I should say I've read that ther was such an opinion, not having read the accounts myslf- and he fought more HoF fighters han most modern boxers have fights.
So what would he do with tody's welterweights? Anything he wanted to do. There was much more to him than dirty tactics. When Billy Conn, Robinson, Beau Jack and others top flight guys say that fighting him was like going to boxing college, he had to have some skill other than low blows and thumbs.
