Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 9 - Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno
Glad to see you're including the previous fights, I'm off for a few days now I think I'll catch up tomorrow. I haven't seen the Calzaghe-Reid fight since the night and it was a long long time ago, I've seen Lewis-Bruno a good few times.

You had a good suggestion.SNG wrote:Glad to see you're including the previous fights, I'm off for a few days now I think I'll catch up tomorrow. I haven't seen the Calzaghe-Reid fight since the night and it was a long long time ago, I've seen Lewis-Bruno a good few times.
I had no reason not to go along with it.

It's an interesting concept, I hope you carry it on next year with another theme.Horse wrote:You had a good suggestion.SNG wrote:Glad to see you're including the previous fights, I'm off for a few days now I think I'll catch up tomorrow. Please explain.
Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 9 - Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno
Well it's pretty much never ending, you could go greatest knockouts, greatest non-title fights, greatest body punchers you could add pretty much any theme you like, obviously it would specialise from where you currently are but it's a never ending theme.Horse wrote:Another theme?SNG wrote:It's an interesting concept, I hope you carry it on next year with another theme.

I could also simply keep the general challenge going for a second year.

True, it was just a suggestion. One of the better ideas that I've seen here, wish it would have started a few years ago.Horse wrote:Perhaps.SNG wrote:Well it's pretty much never ending, you could go greatest knockouts, greatest non-title fights, greatest body punchers you could add pretty much any theme you like, obviously it would specialise from where you currently are but it's a never ending theme.

Would starting this earlier have made BoxRec much of a better place?SNG wrote:True, it was just a suggestion. One of the better ideas that I've seen here, wish it would have started a few years ago.

Not particularly, it's just good to see fights of significance that may have passed me by.Horse wrote:Would starting this earlier have made BoxRec much of a better place?SNG wrote:True, it was just a suggestion. Yes.SNG wrote:No particularly, it's just good to see fights of significance that may have passed me by.
I feel quite bad because my enthusiasm for this challenge has plummeted in recent weeks.
I mostly blame this on my Swine Flu, but the lack of quality footage from older fights has also upset me.

Diagnosed?
I had a particularly bad cold recently, it lasted two weeks. The most disconcerting part was the metallic taste I was left with for a few days.

Yes, I had a swab taken.SNG wrote:Swine flu?

It's been going on 6 weeks. It's bloody ridiculous.

That fight was one of franks finer moments for me, ok Lewis wasn't the finished article yet but it was a joy watching big frank out jab even outbox Lewis for most of the fight and yes Bruno could be a little fragile around the whiskers but Lewis had a helluva job trying to put him down at the end, it was a very entertaining fight and an even bigger occasion.

Would have thought Equine flu would have been more apt.Horse wrote:Yes, I had a swab taken.SNG wrote:Swine flu?

Just watching this now, a nice reminder of just how athletic the younger Lewis, weighing in at 16st5 or so, was.
Brunos attempts to negate the Lewis jab remind me very much of nortona tactics against Ali.

I spent a lot of time uncovering British fighters, who had faced ATGs and thought "I really want to see that now" then couldn't find bloody footage.
This really came to a head when I was discussing the Archie Moore vs Ezzard Charles trilogy on the Boxing history forum and couldn't find any footage of these 3 massively historically significant fights.
Although I forgot all about it when I was being treated for cholera.

I thought Bruno started off excellent and i had him in front and still in control before the end although i did give Lewis the 6th,Lennox had a great jab but i thought Frank's was better and busier and he did did seen to hurt Lewis early on with a right hand, great finish from Lewis though,Bruno was taking some clean shots especially uppecuts

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 9 - Lennox Lewis vs Frank Bruno
On the recent rewatch what struck me most about the jabbing contest was, one, Bruno was jabbing with his right hand in a nice high parrying position, and two, he was mixing it up by throwing it to the body a lot, both being big factors in him winning that battle for most of the fight. The jabs to the body were landing with a real thud, too.
