Yet another matchmaking disappointment

Post by jujigatame »

Reports now coming out that Frampton will vacate the WBA belt he just won to avoid fighting Rigondeaux and instead will fight his IBF mandatory, Shingo Wake.

So we get no Frampton vs. Rigo, no Kovalev vs. Stevenson, no Golovkin vs. Jacobs, no Crawford vs. Postol, no Cotto vs. Lara, no Santa Cruz vs. Selby/Cuellar/Russell.

Life as a boxing fan really sucks sometimes.

I don't know why fans support these guys.....they're cheating all of boxing.

In fairness Wake WAS his original mandatory, long before Rigo was...strangely the Japanese media are suggesting Wake is unlikely to get the Frampton fight

This why we need a league or organization that regulates all of boxing. Nobody would watch football anymore if the Patriots cherry picked the Browns to play in the superbowl.

When it comes to mandatories, you have no fornicating choice. And if you drop a belt after avoiding them over and over you should be fined and suspended.

Also, less belts please. And less weight classes, fussing over a 5 pound difference is hilarious. Let's bring back just having 7-8, minimum, feather, light, welter, middle, super middle, l heavy and heavy. No more fornicating jr. and "super" titles, no more catch weights unless a guy is making a big leap up and is adjusting or something. It's a cancer to the sport and a major turn off to casuals and newcomers when theres over a dozen divisions and 4 champs in each one.

Exactly. Boxing is at a crossroads without some regulation of matchmaking the sport is doomed. The cat is way out of the bag and has run away with no hope of catching it.

It felt like Haymon was trying to do this with the PBC but ultimately his matchmaking hasn't been any better than the boxing norm. A few big fights per year surrounded by scads of mismatches.

Wake is pretty decent but at absolute best he's the #5 guy in the division. I'm sick of seeing #1 vs. #5 when #2-4 are available.

That shouldn't even be allowed. If you've cleared out your mandatories and have consistently beaten the top 4 guys throughout the year, I have no problems taking the #5-10 (they still have to make money, and you wear yourself out constantly fighting top opponents with no break).

However, guys like KELL BROOKE should be suspended or stripped for their foolishness.

Yeah I like Haymon and it's rare for fighters to praise their managers. But the Adrian broner vs khabib fiasco proves he definitely views fighters as assets and won't hesitate to "protect" them to milk more money. Overall he does better than most but he's still guilty of allowing cherry picking and ducking.

Another reason why I like the heavyweights much more, except for Wilder. Even though I have to admit, that even in his case, I respect him more as I used to, after the Szpilka fight.

it's the money they make without those fights. Guys like Leonard and hearns had to fight each other for a huge payday. Granted, Tommy never stopped seeking the toughest fights. Ray did.

I'm more pissed that fight fans don't seem to realise boxing goes on outside of Europe and the US. If you've not heard of Wake you've been living under a rock, the guy has been a mandatory since beating Tawatchai (by all means be annoyed about Tawatchai being in an eliminator), and has scored wins over solid Asian fighters (Lee, Baat and Oguni being the most notable).

Stylistically he's a nightmare for Frampton as well. High risk, low reward.

Between HBO and these Ducking Chickensh*t boxers we will all witness a great talent like Rigo go to waste and then by the time they all decide to grow a pair and fight him he won't be what he once was.

I agree that Wake is no easy fight for anybody.

Should be a competitive bout -- I wouldn't be surprised at all if Wake beats Frampton.

It's just a disappointing state of affairs. I didn't even list all the issues we have now:

- Kell Brook fighting his 3rd straight no-hoper.

- Wilder basically having fought 1 decent opponent in his entire career and now may not even be fighting Povetkin as promised.

- Broner taking a hysterical joke of a fight against Theophane.

- Ward arguably hasn't fought a worthy opponent since 2012 and will only theoretically break that streak towards the end of the year.

I mean, what in the actual f*ck.

I agree, there's been some piss poor fights.

They need to change things to encourage the big fights. Like the sanctioning bodies not letting joke defence like Broner vs Theophane. As soon as that was even proposed Broner should have been stripped.

At least Crolla is showing some balls by facing Baroso.
