Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
Like Canelo-Khan, these fights never make for a good spectacle. It's all cat and mouse, little guy plays matador and tries to use speed to win rounds while the bigger guy tries to time or slow down the smaller guy. It just turns me right off when one fighter simply does not have the physical tools to match the larger or more powerful fighter in any way to the point where their entire fight plan revolves around running, staying out of range and stealing rounds.
People say Khan is brave to step up to Middle, but the reality is that he's going in against a fighter who does as little as possible. He only stops guys who recklessly stand and trade like Kirkland did. There really is very little risk for Khan unless Canelo times him like Garcia did and if that happens it will probably be lights out, but hardly makes for an exciting fight? Also I think it will be ugly seeing Khan try to use Hunters punch punch hold tactics as opposed to the punch punch get out of range tactics used by Roach. Canelo will be throwing him around like a ragdoll if Khan is holding all night.
The whole story of the fight will be whether Canelo can catch Khan or not. If he doesn't it will be a boring fight with Khan making him look silly, if he does catch him then we've already seen Khan flattened a few times before and he'll pick up a nice payday whilst being able to scratch the defeat out and continue as a Welter. The risk is all on Canelo, but it's only a pride risk, not like the health risk he'd face with GGG.
I'd have much rathered see Khan in with any of Thurman, Mayweather, Garcia & Brook over Canelo.

Don't agree at all. I'm really looking forward to this. Great fight.
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
I know what you are saying, but it doesn't always end up like that..... Jones didn't run from Ruiz, Pacquiao certainly didn't run from DLH.johnswan1 wrote:Like Canelo-Khan, these fights never make for a good spectacle. I wish people would stop saying Khan is stepping up to middleweight. He's not. He's moving to 1 lb above the light middle limit. It's catch weight
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
Take the point of the OP but I am looking forward to this fight. I quite like watching the smaller guy getting his shots off but in the knowledge that the bigger guy has the power to end it instantly. Keeps it quite interesting IMO. The Haye Valuev fight was frickin woeful though. Every Valuev fight I watched was the same to be fair.
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
You seem to be describing Canelo vs Lara.
Khan simply doesn't have the tools to box like Lara or Trout, or Floyd. Chris Algieri walked him down and found him to be an easy target.
I'm more switched off by the mis-match this fight represents, it's going to be hyped up to the level of Canelo vs Cotto but is going to look a carbon copy of Canelo vs Josesito Lopez imo. A 2-3 round pasting.

Size vs speed fights aren't typically my favourite, but I certainly don't hate them.
I'm quite looking forward to this one, if only because Khan is never in a dull fight.

Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
Fights in the mould of Michael Spinks stepping up to challenge Larry Holmes I like but Canelo-Khan says a lot about what's wrong with boxing today. I hope that it is a farce/disaster so that there isn't the desire for any more in a hurry.
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
I think we all know as soon as khan gets hit he is either not getting up or he will fight back like a mad man as usual, with any tactics going out of the window, khan just can't help himself.
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
1 lbs above Light Middleweight IS Middleweight.... there is a Middleweight range and he is stepping up to it. Sure it is catch weight also, as he is preventing Canelo fighting at his optimum weight, but both in the Middleweight limit. It's a middleweight fight alright.reggaereggae wrote:I wish people would stop saying Khan is stepping up to middleweight. He's not. He's moving to 1 lb above the light middle limit. It's catch weight
Did Roy Jones fight Ruiz at Heavyweight or three pounds above Cruiserweight?? (at the time, he was actually lighter for that fight than he has been recently).

Technically yes; but that's just silly. They're not fighting at the middleweight limit, they're fighting at 155, a weight limit that doesn't have a name because it doesn't existstujones wrote:1 lbs above Light Middleweight IS Middleweight.... there is a Middleweight range and he is stepping up to it. Being extremely pedantic I know, but it does - Middleweight. Middleweight is from 155-160.reggaereggae wrote:Technically yes; but that's just silly. As when DLH came in at 145 lbs (with no stipulation) for Pacquiao, he didn't come in at a "no weight limit" he fought at Welterweight. You don't have to be smack on the weight limit to be a "middleweight", "welterweight" etc - there is the range, which they are both fighting in.

Technically correct - but to my mind, when neither fighter is actually allowed to use about 80% of the middleweight range, I don't consider it a genuine middleweight fight.stujones wrote:Being extremely pedantic I know, but it does - Middleweight. Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
Being even more pedantic Middleweight is -160, we've seen several cases proving a division has no lower limit, only an upper limit, barring heavyweight
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
Hagler v leonard..was a good fight, but then in those days hitting and holding was not only frowned upon by the elite fighters, the refs didnt stand for it
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
This is the key fact that causes most people to moan about these "middleweight" fights. Yes the range is 155-160 and apearing anywhere in that range is middleweight.Boxerbeetle wrote:

But restricting people from fighting anywhere in that band is not right.
In cases like this where both fighters are happy to agree with the limit then why complain?
I'd be more concerned if Canelo was fight someone like Jacobs and making him drop 5lbs.
But then you have to ask the question, if you are middleweight champ why not fight Jacobs, why not defend against a middle weight.
This fight for the middleweight title is a blown up light welter weight fighting a light middle weight at 1lb over the LMW limit.
The other thing that niggles at me is that Canelo was a big light middle weight who can enter the ring weighing above the light heavy weight limit. He's not fighting below the middle weight limit because he's too small but because he doesn't want to face the real middleweight contenders and champions, particularly GGG.

I agree, he's never shown himself able to control his way to a win after he's been bashed up - depending on your opinion, he's too brave, or too stupid for his own good sadly.Rexob wrote:I think we all know as soon as khan gets hit he is either not getting up or he will fight back like a mad man as usual, with any tactics going out of the window, khan just can't help himself.
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
The only thing i like about it is the fact itll be a hyped fight that will bring excitment and a knockout.
The last 3 hyped fights have been floyd pacquiao, klitchko fury and frampton quigg. All borefests. Canelo will spark khan within 4. Canelo will be around 185 and khan 165 come fight night and khan cant take a dig.... Plus, there has been little improvement, if any, in khan under hunter. This really is a lamb to the slaughter.

On the money.
Re: Anyone else hate size vs speed fights like Canelo-Khan?
nah size vs speed fights can be great but this one is definitely going to end with khan struggling to gather his whereabouts

That is Canelos optimum weight. He's a lazy light middle.
