This WBA heavyweight tournament....

Post by Wales »

I notice everyone keeps mentioning the WBA HEavyweight tournament. Have the fighters and promoters actually agreed and signed any contracts to be in it?

Also, does anyone know why Oquendo gets a bye in the first round? Lost against Chagaev 2 years ago, hasnt fought since, get pass to the "semi final"

What happened that Ortiz had a WBA strap but this last fight he did not have it? Besides Fury is the champ of the WBA anyway. This is a second issue belt which is just the dumbest thing ever and could only happen in one sport. BOXING.

It was a non-title fight for Ortiz....

OK thank you for that answer so he is still the WBA champ second issued belt. Good to know.

Don't forget Lucas Browne has a WBA Belt also. Luis Ortiz would be an Interim Champion...making it the 3rd in order of significance just for WBA belts.

The WBA has badly watered down it's belt in recent years with all this Regular and Interim title nonsense. I'd say most people probably consider it the least important of the Big 4 belts at this point, and it's all their own doing.

Three heavies hold WBA gold. An absolute joke, just like this tournament.

I don't think the WBA would strip any of the champions for not participating in tournament.
If they did they would just sanction another 2 bums to fight for a watered down belt.
The WBA will not change

If this tournament actually occurs, it will clean up much of the HW mess, not just for the WBA belts but the division as a whole. I am skeptical that it actually comes off, but if they make guys vacate for not participating then at least the number of belts will go down. We'll see what happens. I just want to see Ortiz against the fury-klit winner.

Is three the most that have ever been issued in a division by 1 organization?? If not, then I want to know.

I get caught up in the ABC belt bullshit, but then my senses come back. WBA super, regular, interim, gold, silver, bronze, copper, galvanized, international, etc, etc, etc. all bullshit. Belts don't mean squat anymore.

They ordered a rematch for oquendo, he agreed for chagaev to have a defense and then he got hurt before the rematch.

Will it clear up any of the mess apart from the mess the WBA have created themselves?

No Wilder, Povetkin, Martin, Joshua, Haye, Pulev, Parker in there. Cant see anyone unify the division for a long time now. Not a bad thing as long as they fight each other.
