Apart from the KD DeWitt scored in the 2nd it was pretty much 1 way traffic until the end, still always good to see a prime Benn do his thing across the pond
Likewise with the Barkley fight, that was a great wee war that, pity about the 3 knockdown rule being in effect because there couldve been a lot more action,Nigel was lucky to get away with hitting Iran when he was down though

He should have had at least a point deducted.

What level was Dewitt at here? I know nothing much about him.
His record seems pretty good.
Take the knockdown of Benn out and this is a total destruction, which is pretty impressive.

He was pretty much at the end of a hard career by the time Benn got to him, was still a good name to have on your record thoughHorse wrote:I don't really know either.garethhop wrote:What level was Dewitt at here? I know nothing much about him.

DeWitt was probably around his prime in 83 and 84, but could be hot and cold anyway. He pushed Hearns for a full 12 rounds, then lost his next one in 3 rounds to Quinones.
DeWitt lost convincingly to Kalambay by KO, then went on to beat Sim and Hilton for the WBO title, so I think that shows at that time DeWitt was good enough to beat the fringe contenders but lose to a top 10 guy when he moved up. As he found out against Benn.

A bit pointless scoring this one, total one way traffic.
Even the second would have gone to Benn if it hadn't been for the knockdown.
But a really entertaining bout, Benn was a joy to watch at his best.
Aggressive, busy, great head and upper body movement, nice work to the body, really effective inside with hooks and uppercuts and just a very natural looking fighter.
In many ways, like a middleweight Joe Frazier.

Benn very close to his prime here.
Really ferocious and batters DeWitt from start to finish pretty much.
He did well to get the finish when he did as he was looking a bit gassed and he seemed to roll his ankle.

Classic Benn at his best against good opposition who was in form at the time.
His speed, as Sugar Ray Leonard pointed out before the fight, was too much for Dewitt to cope with (not to mention the explosive power).
What a great career Benn had. The excitement is used to generate was thrilling. Not bad for someone who was quoted as saying he'd had been pleased with a Southern Area title when he turned pro.

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 10 - Nigel Benn vs Doug DeWitt
I remember this fight clearly as I'm a massive Benn fan.
I loved the way he destroyed Dewitt, he bullied a tough fighter and to be honest, battered him. Dewitt was still a decent fighter at the time, although past his best.
Benn was heartbroken after the Watson fight and left, apparently hidden by his bouncers as he was distraught about the result after the hype he'd created. He felt the need to prove himself after that loss, and typical of him as a fighter, he went to the USA and took the hard route with Dewitt & Barkley rather than taking soft fights at home.
In my opinion, he'll go down as one of the UK's greats, given his record, and some of the names he beat. He never shied away from the big fights.
