Most Significant Fight of 2016
Most Significant Fight of 2016
What do you see being the most significant fight of 2016?
Few contenders:
Fury Wlad 2:
A chance to cenent a new king of the HW division and wave goodbye to the Kiltchkos if Fury wins again. If Wlad wins back his crown then we're back to having Klitchko as king being chased by the pack.
Povetkin v Wilder
Sticking with the HW scene the winner of this bout is going to have a strong claim as being the best HW in some peoples view, and should set up a fight with Fury if he keeps his belts vs Klitchko.
Pacquiao vs Bradley 3:
Similar to Fury vs Klitchko but in the most lucrative division in boxing. If Bradley wins i guess he takes up the mantle of being the man at 147. If Pac wins he's still the man, and i suspect will give 1 more fighter the chance to take the torch, perhaps Crawford.

Easily Golovkin/Canelo if it happens.
Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
Kovalev vs Ward if it happens.
Golovkin would walk through Canelo at 160, so it is not on top of my list. I expect Kovalev to walk through Ward, but there are many disagreeing with that, so I am anxious to see what happens if Ward's knee doesn't swell again.

Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
I really don't think anyone is going to "walk through" Canelo. Whether it's at 155 or 160 makes little difference, they'd be about the same size in the ring.
I am a big Golovkin fan and he is a huge talent, but he also turns 34 years old in a month, and I don't think any of his opponents have been on Canelo's level. I think Golovkin/Canelo will be a close, competitive fight, if it happens.

Bookies think differently: Golovkin is 6/1 favorite.jujigatame wrote:I think Golovkin/Canelo will be a close, competitive fight, if it happens.

Source? I've seen Golovkin at -350 and -400. He's the favorite but against Wade he's -10000 so -350 is pretty close.

Kovalev/Ward if it happens. To this point, nothing fought or signed has been overly significant.
Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
It'd have to be Golovkin v Canelo to sort out the pecking order at middleweight.
Joshua v Martin could also turn out to be a very significant bout.

Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
I only included matches that are contracted in my OP but i'd probably agree that 'if' Golovkin v Canelo gets made it's the best p4p match-up to be made (although a mismatch imo).
Going on hypotheticals Kovalev vs Ward or Stevenson would be a contender.

Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
i'd rather see kovalev-stevenson than kovalev-ward.
probably be more fireworks, less holding and butting and spoiling.
GGG grabbing another belt would be significant, especially if he gets
his hands on saunders at some point. all 4 belts is getting harder to
do as time goes on. GGG might be the last to do it.
the heavyweight shakeout is the thing that can raise interest in the
sport as the heavies are the marqui division. with fury-wlad II,
wilder-povetkin, martin-joshua, haye, ortiz, and others fighting,
the heavy division is really heating up. i think as this division goes,
so goes the sport. there will always be good fights in lighter divisions,
but the heavies can draw the most attention to the sport and this
could be a good year for the division.

The real question is will the North Americans step up and sign for the biggest fights that can be made? That is what it comes down to. Fury, Kovalev, GGG are willing to fight anyone in their division. Will the North Americans step up and sign or continue to avoid them?

all hail the courageous billy joe saunders turning down $3mil vs GGG to defend against... bursak?
yay kell brook?
GGG and kovalev actually live and train in california, which apparently is the land of cowards.
meanwhile povetkin tells the WBC he needs a delay until the spring, forces the purse bid,
has his owner take a loss on the bid so he can fight in russia, wilder is going to russia,
and somehow wilder is the coward. if wilder decapitates povetkin, this guy will drop kick
his mom's cat across the living room and throw a tantrum until she makes him macaroni
the way he likes it to calm him down.

Would still love to see Canelo-GGG.
GGG is my favourite fighter in years. Would love to see him get the fight and crossover to become a genuine world sport superstar.

Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
Bravo. I really wish that this was more of an outcry here in the states or some sort of a spotlight on the cowards that have adopted the Floyd business model of boxing: Get the most money for the safest fights possible. GGG and Kovalev (disagree w/Fury being anywhere near those two names to my left btw) are the only elite boxers today begging for a test against the best.Lancenix wrote:The real question is will the North Americans step up and sign for the biggest fights that can be made? Btw, the Floyd business model is more than just being a pussy and getting paid for it somehow. You also have to follow the WWE script and become the bad guy, the one that people hate so much that they will continually pay money to watch them possibly lose.
Floyd's negative impact on Boxing will continue to be felt until PPV numbers drop to the point where promoters can no longer make a worthwhile profit from a mismatch. Promoters have been making money for years now without risking their cash cows and it will continue if we keep paying for shiit.

Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
Rigo vs Lomachenko imo is the best fight of top level skills
Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
The most significant fight of 2016 will be late year in the HW div, IMO. It will come off of the handful of fights happening by July. A couple of several possibilities are Fury v Wilder / Povetkin, and Joshua / Martin v Ortiz / Wilder / Fury.
If Fury can get by WKlit and Wilder can get by Povetkin and the fight can be made it would be monstrous. That is a lot of ifs / ands though.

So would be Wlad vs Wilder.Tanzio wrote:The most significant fight of 2016 will be late year in the HW div, IMO. It will come off of the handful of fights happening by July. A couple of several possibilities are Fury v Wilder / Povetkin, and Joshua / Martin v Ortiz / Wilder / Fury.

Re: Most Significant Fight of 2016
Fury is busy with a rematch. Wilder is busy with Povetkin, in Russia. Ortiz is staying busy waiting for his shot. Martin is traveling to the UK to put his (worthless) belt on the line v Joshua. Wilder, Ortiz and Martin would be more than happy to fight Fury anywhere, if they get by their current tests.Lancenix wrote:The real question is will the North Americans step up and sign for the biggest fights that can be made? Farcenix fail #1.
Kovalev v SOGgy is on the table if they both keep winning. Four of Krusher's last six fights have been v North American.
Farcenix fail #2.
3G has been avoided by everyone from everywhere, including a (worthless) belt holder from the UK. GingerHead is on record saying that the 3G fight "must happen." Jacobs has no scheduled fight yet for 2016. 3G is fighting his third North American in a row.
Farcenix fail #3.
Farcenix continues running from Saad after challenging him to a boxing match anywhere, anytime.
Farcenix = the only coward in the thread.
