James Toney.

Best puncher: Merqui Sosa — Sam Peter is the hardest puncher I’ve fought, but pound-for-pound it’s Sosa because he hurt me the most. I’ll never forget that fight, we fought on an ESPN show in Atlantic City on a Sunday. I went at him like I did everyone back then and that mother f_____ hit me so hard in the third round I was seeing triple for the next three rounds. He knew how to hit and he was so awkward that I couldn’t time him and he caught me high on the head.

Reggie Johnson

BEST PUNCHER – Lamar Parks: The best punchers I must acknowledge are the ones who knocked me down, Eric Williams, Victor Walker, Ismael Negron, Eddie Hall and Roy Jones. Speed generates power and the punch you don’t see is the one that knocks you down. Three other hard punchers I must mention that didn’t knock me down are Jorge Castro, William Guthrie and, my friend and former foe, the late Julio Gonzalez, Rest in peace, champ. We love and miss you.

[If I had to pick, it would be between] Lamar Parks and William Guthrie. Lamar hit me with a body shot that I should have won an acting award due to him not knowing how bad that punch affected me. Likewise Guthrie hit me on more than one occasion and he had no idea how I felt from the head and body punches he landed on me. I’d go with Lamar Parks.

Best puncher: Nigel Benn hit the hardest. I don’t even think Benn knew how hard he hit to be honest (laughs). Nigel caught me flush in the first fight and I thought he had broken all of my teeth and this horrible taste filled my mouth. I actually felt sick to my stomach and nobody had ever hit me like that before.

STRONGEST
Jose Luis Lopez: He could take the punches and he kept pressuring. His punches were harder than any other punches I took from anybody else to this day.

BEST PUNCHER
Lopez: He has the experience, he had everything over me at that time. De La Hoya has no punch.

Jorge Arce

BEST PUNCHER – Michael Carbajal: “Whenever he hit me it hurt. The jab hurt my hands. (Arce mimics catching Carbajal’s punches on the gloves, grimacing) Ouch, ouch. His hands were like steel. Carbajal’s punches were like being hit by a steel bar. I remember every punch he gave me in the 11 rounds … Donaire is very fast, very explosive and Jhonny is very hard, very strong, different punches. Carbajal is the strongest.”

the heavies are obviously the hardest hitters
and the one who faced most HOF opponents
is arguably muhammad ali. he said ernie shavers
hit hardest. reality might be different, but that
seems a solid line of argument for me.

I'm not surprised by that, he looked very heavy handed.

Jose Ribalta: "To me the hardest puncher was Bonecrusher (Smith). Bonecrusher - he could punch. His hands are so heavy. He caught me, Wow. Eddie Gregg - you ever hear of him? I was sparring him in New York. He was the only guy who hit me and it sounded like a bomb. Then I hit the ground, it woke me up. One thing about me, I'd recover fast."

Howard Davis Jr.: "There was a Colombian in the amateurs. The guy was a big guy, his record was like 88-0 with 55 KO's. I'll never forget that record. We fought in Washington DC in 1975, it was USA vs. Colombia. In the first round the guy hit me real hard. I woke up in the dressing room. He hit so hard he jarred my memory. I woke up when my father took my handwraps off. I whispered to him, Where am I? Did I win? He said, Yeah, you won. He hit you with one punch, he never hit you again. After that one punch I didn't remember anything. My father said I was signing autographs on the way to the dressing room."

Sugar Ray Leonard

What’s the hardest you’ve ever been hit?

I took some good shots in the second fight with Tommy Hearns [in June 1989], the first fight with Roberto Duran [in June 1980] and my only fight with Wilfred Benitez [in November 1979]. But I fought Marcos Geraldo in May 1979 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and I had moved up in weight to 153 pounds. I remember that fight vividly, like it was yesterday. That guy hit me so hard that I saw three of him, and I punched the one in the middle, and thank God it was the correct decision. (Leonard won a 10-round unanimous decision.) But those fights were the ones in which I was hit the hardest.

During an interview in 1940, Hall of Famer Jack Johnson reminisced about the hardest punchers he faced.

"Jeffries No. 1? No, sir. Give me Joe Choynski anytime. I faced both and should know. Jefferies had a powerful wallop, but Choynski had a paralyzing punch. His left hand was a corker. He was the hardest puncher in the last 50 years, with Joe Walcott a close second. I think his left hook was even more effective than either Dempseys."

A review of Johnson's record shows that Choynski is the only man to knock out the former champ besides Jess Willard.

Corbett was no less laudatory, "Little Joe was the hardest hitter I ever tangled with. To this day I can't figure out how a runt like him could hurt so damned bad."

BoxingInsider.com: You are coming off of a tough fought knockout loss to one of the hardest punchers in the sport, Sergey Kovalev. A.) what did you take away from the fight? & B.) is he the hardest puncher you’ve ever been in the ring against?

Jean Pascal: I need to improve defensively, I need to be more responsible with my hands and not be so easy to hit with the jab. And no, Froch was (the hardest puncher)

I don't believe Pascal in this case. He has reason to not want to give Kovalev any credit following the whole "I never respect him" thing that followed the rematch

Earnie Shavers once sparred with Sonny Liston ?
I've never heard that one before.
(you think he would have mentioned it in his autobiography,WELCOME TO THE BIG TIME.
I know Joe Bugner said he sparred with Sonny Liston in 1970 in NYC.
