Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Selby became the first person to stop Fidoe tonight. Not sure of the details as to the stoppage.
Thought? Anybody seen the fight at all?

Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Was wondering the same myself - anyone on here see the fight?
Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Brett was doing okay until round 3 when Selby started giving him a boxing lesson; he seemed to gas a lot and took some heavy shots only hitting air when he threw punches back. In round 6 Selby caught him with some good unanswered shots so much so Selby looked at the ref to step in and stop it but it was allowed to carry on until Brett was backed up against the ropes and took about 12 unanswered shots (one was a great uppercut) and the referee stepped in. As usual the fighter and his corner moaned about the stoppage but Brett had lost every round; was hitting nothing when he did throw punches and then got cornered and didn't throw anything back.
Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Selby himself said it was early, the promoter said it was early, tony borg said it was early,Nigel christian came over having a go from the other corner saying that was ridiculous, couple of board inspectors shrugged and shook there heads,The mc said it was early,
Brett went to give it a good go and wasnt hurt but was tired but those above are the people who i can name there were plenty more who thought it was early
Went into andrews dressing room to congratulate him and guess what the topic of conversation was ? great performance but was a bit of an early stoppage.
Wasnt even going to mention it as the ref has to do his job the way he sees fit but to turn round and say the fighter and his corner were moaning like it was just us isnt really fair at all.

Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Martin im not having a knock here either the ref has to do it how he sees fit,but when the list of boxing people the likes of tony borg jamie sanigar nigel cristian sammy simms all think its early and voice it straight away i tend to think it was.
If any of those guys had gone he was actualy taking a bit of stick was probably for the best id have agreed but not one of them did.
Its a shame because the ref is a nice guy and a decent ref but most boxing people there tonight thought he got it wrong.
The fact it was brought up on here straight away defending the early stoppage before it had even been mentioned shows to me people know it was early , but no big deal the better man won and nobody got hurt so thats the important thing

Incedently chatting on the way home about the pullout of charlie edwards,Brett after boxing them both thinks edwards has the edge but not by much.He also said both are major leagues above Patel.
Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
great to hear, from what youre saying, a journeyman going to win and not just survive (i assume he was having a go from your posts?)
A journeyman never wants to be stopped, means he cant fight for 28 days. 7 if you see final bell.

Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Andrew Selby is class btw. The better of the two brothers, just turned 27 though, needs to get a lick without over matching him. Surprised he didnt get picked up by Hearn, what with Lee being with matchroom and potentially having big fights on the horizon.

Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Fidoe is arguably the best journeyman around. I really rate him.
How many days notice did he have for this?
Great win by Selby I didn't think he'd stop him.
Problem with the Edwards fight is that they've probably sparred a lot for Team GB. Selby would have a good chance of walking through him.
Can't see Selby staying a flyweight too long he cuts a incredible amount of weight.

He still hasn't fought at the flyweight limit as a pro.PredatorHayds wrote:Fidoe is arguably the best journeyman around. I really rate him.

Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
No complaints of premature stoppage in that review. But another i read interestingly said...
"Doing that for all of the remaining rounds was a big ask and Selby finally forced the end of the contest in the sixth session. Moments after shaking his left hand and wincing as if it was injured, Selby appeared to wave the official in to intervene and he would do a minute later.
Fidoe tried to duck and dive to safety and could argue that he wasn’t trapped or pinned down any worse than he had been in earlier rounds. However, his troublesome patches became increasing frequent and referee Martin Williams had seen enough with a minute and three seconds left in the round."
Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Was a terrible stoppage, but Selby was getting him in the corner and started doing that thing Lee did where he calls the ref, although I don't think Fidoe was ever hurt probably just more shook up from the our speed of Selby's punches. Actually pretty impressed with Fidoe though he gave everything.
Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Yep the above post is about right thats the opinion of most people there and like i say i value the opinion of the boxing people i named quite highley,Andrew was a mile in front and brett was tired but if every fight was stopped because someone was tired and behind on pts it would get boring and one sided very quickly.
Fair play to selby hes a huge talent and obviously going places but when even home fans who were actualy there are calling it a premature stoppage i think that answers the questions most reporters usualy go on the positives where the home star is concerned.
Refs get it wrong sometimes they are only human and id much rather he stopped it too quickly rather than too late but it is what it is people know what they saw

Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Jon you're a boxing man through and through and I respect your opinion; mine however is that a boxer taking a barrage of unanswered punches in rounds one - two - three - four and five when relatively fresh cannot keep taking the same punches when he is tired and fatigued. The most important thing is to protect the boxer. Brett is one tough son of a gun but he was drained come round 6 and took a lot of unanswered shots pal. It only takes one big one to do a lot of damage and the speed they were landing! Well as the reporter said it must have seemed like Brett was surrounded.
Re: Andrew Selby v Brett Fidoe
Yup the reporter saw it one way the ref the man who mattered saw it that way,but tony borg, nigel christian, jamie sanigar, selby himself, the house second,a few of the board officials by there surprised expresssions a couple of the posters on here, and obviously myself and our corner saw it another.Realistic wrote:Jon you're a boxing man through and through and I respect your opinion; mine however is that a boxer taking a barrage of unanswered punches in rounds one - two - three - four and five when relatively fresh cannot keep taking the same punches when he is tired and fatigued. And be honest if that barrage had all landed on a tired lad from a world class lad you think hed still be standing.
Like i say i honestly would rather the ref stops it to early rather than too late so i wasnt even going to mention or complain until i seen the comment saying the boxer an his corner complained as usual,i just wanted to point out the very knowledgable names that also thought exactly the same ringside.Jamie sanigar even went as far as to post on facebook it was an early stoppage.
