Well, travel-wise I made it to the Midlands, Yorkshire, Newcastle, parts of Scotland, but never to the scousers. My favorite corner in Britain is Cornwall, btw. Doesn't rain quite as often....

Harsh but true! I'm from a place called Bridgwater in Somerset, and most people assume that Somerset, Devon and Cornwall are one and the same, but the reality is that I was closer to London than somewhere like Truro - still a good 160+ mile trek from Somerset to the middle of Cornwall.
I did my journalism post-grad at Cornwall College and the further down into Cornwall you get, the more bizarre the people, especially when you're there 'out of season'. Don't be fooled by the sunshine and beaches though, it's actuallyamong the most depressed counties in England, as since the tin mines shut the entire regional economy is largely dependent on tourism. Go inland, away from the resorts, and you'll see genuine poverty. And of course matters aren't helped by Londoners buying second homes that send the property market through the roof in places like Padstow, so the locals are forced out.
Whole SW is still the most beautiful part of the UK though - Exmoor, Dartmoor, Croyde etc.

I wouldn’t call them “strange”, they are just different. Usually more relaxed and content with life it seems. Working to live, rather than living to work and all that....

They probably think Londoners are strange for their shifty “is he on coke or isn’t he?” eyes, constant obsession with mobile phones, and inability to shut up occasionally. Too many Londoners treat other parts of the country like their playground when I see them.

In London of course, there isn't really such a thing as outsiders, as most areas are in a constant state of flux with migrants from all over the world landing continuously.

This is especially true in the south west, where they find the thought out outisders moving in particularly disturbing.

You make the people of the South West sound like extras from Deliverance.

I guess the SW is (rightly or wrongly) one of the last mainstays of “traditional” England, with all the values and social norms that go with it. A member of an ethnic minority is as common as bacon sandwiches at a Bar Mitzvah in many of these small towns and villages, so its just a general concern amongst the communities that outsiders are inevitably here to “change” things.

Some people don’t like change. Some people like the way things are. They aren’t inherently racist, its just that being dragged kicking and screaming into multiculturalism (and importantly – the change in social norms and values) isn’t what everyone wants.

It just depends on what side of the coin you are I suppose.

I don't think anyone is claiming it is are they? James' point was simply that some people don't react well to 'outsiders', which I agreed with. All the examples you've given aren't about 'outsiders' moving into an area or community per se, but far more about tribalism.
