Most Synonymous Punch In Boxing?

Post by Monte Fisto »

Who has the most synonymous punch in boxing?

Is it a Frazier Left Hook or a Larry Holmes jab? I'm not asking who has the best left hook or jab of all time, but which punch do you associate with one fighter more than any other?

Pretty much the first thing that comes to my mind when I see or hear Frazier's name is the left hook. I don't think I associate a punch more with any other fighter.

Every time I think of Azumah Nelson, I can't help but think of the lead left uppercut that put away Pat Cowdell. Not many fighters can throw that punch effectively and even less can win a fight with one.

More recently Hattons left to the body. Kell Brook has a pretty potent jab.

Micky Ward's left hook to the body was special. 'Enry's Hammer, Ingo's Bingo.

Frazier all the way, but an honorable mention for the Razor Ruddock smash.
Agree with James re. the JCC left hook to the body as well.

I always had a soft spot for Tommy Hearns hooking off the jab. Not an easy punch to throw that one.

I always associate a giant corkscrew uppercut with Froch (although I'm not sure he ever actually landed one of his :OhYes: ).

Slightly off topic but me and one of my mates who train together on the pads use this kind of idea for combinations.
Its grown to be more than simply a fighters signature punch but a fighters name = a certain punch combination and it really speeds up the padwork.

Hatton = 1, 2, Left to Body
Ward = Jab, Left to body
Naz = Step into a left uppercut, straight right, Left hook
Mayweather = 1, 2 slip back with right hand.

They are the simple ones but we also double them up like a 'Hatton into a Naz' would be a 6 punch combo just by instructing they simple words.

Thought id mention it as this theead topic is kind of how it started.

Anyway for me, just reasonably modern fighters.....
Hatton body shot
Cotto left hook
Mayweather straight right hand.

Whenever I remember a Juan Manual Marquez bout it is his left uppercut and right hand combination that stands out. I always think anyone who leads with a left uppercut is either very skilled or very brave. Marquez proved to be both.

The Tyson Fury punch yourself in the face???

I think the Naz "corkscrew" uppercut is one from more recent vintage - his "Rocket Launcher".

Henry's Hammer....

Ceferino Garcia's Bolo Punch - perfected by Leonard.
