Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
I think on paper, Carlos Monzon had one of the best records ever, with all of those wins against Nino Benvenuti, Jose Napoles, Emile Griffith, etc.. SRL had one of the best records, with wins over Hearns, Hagler, Duran, Benitez, etc.. Of course, SRR had possibly the best record, with wins over Jake LaMotta, Kid Gavilan, Henry Armstrong, Sammy Angott, Randy Turpin, Bobo Olson, Gene Fullmer, Carmen Basilio, etc.. Gene Tunney has a great record, with wins over Tommy Loughran, Jack Dempsey, Tommy Gibbons, and several over Harry Greb.

Not to me.gilgamesh wrote:It's pretty hard to be too accomplished in the Strawweight division which is usually shallow on Top fighters and fighters in general, but Lopez certainly looked to be more technically skilled than Calzaghe to me. By a pretty wide margin.SaadOffTheDeck wrote:gilgamesh wrote:
If you'd put Marciano, you'd have to put Floyd too since they have the same record. Ricardo Lopez as well. Since he's also unbeaten and has one more win than them.Floyd clowns Marciano & Lopez. Calzaghe is more accomplished then finito IMO. Langford, greb, Robinson or Armstrong is the poll to me. Charles is the only maybe.
Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Not to me either.
Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Lopez was an amazing boxer and very technically gifted, he also had great concentration skills and good strategies; he placed his punches expertly and did not feel the need to throw 10 punches when 3 could inflict the same damage, he also tended to use feints rather than punches to keep his opponents guard busy. Ricardo was unbeaten amateur and pro so I feel should be more appreciated and his record should be considered excellent.

Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Whenever threads like this and similar crop up I'm always surprised that Gene Tunney very rarely gets a mention.
3 wins over Greb, 2 over Dempsey as well as beating guys like Carpentier and Gibbons. He's got a cracking record.

Barney Ross had a very good record, he faced some top men.

Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
I agree, but it could be that he's just referring to the type or what opponents and not necessarily just the number of victories???davie wrote:I often wonder if Chepppaaa is a troll or just hard of thinking.
But including Manny Pacquiao in this poll tells me I was right on both counts.
He's effing at it and so stupid he thinks he's good at it.
Just go away.
Still in all I'd never include MP in this type of discussion ever, there are so many more better choices, I mean how do you make a Poll like this and not include Marciano or Floyd but include Manny with all his loses and loses by KO at that?
SRR, Armstrong and Wilde should head this list.

Julio cesar chavez 89 wins before his first defeat. A notable mention at least..
Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
He actually lost like his 11th or 12th fight via DQ. It was overturned weeks later after somebody got paid off apparently.95gerog wrote:Julio cesar chavez 89 wins before his first defeat. A notable mention at least..
Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Yory Boy Campas had a crazy record going into the Tito bout.
Wilfredo Gomez had a great record going into the Sanchez bout.
Carlos Zarate had an amazing record going into the Gomez bout.
Rueben Olivares had an exceptional record while world champion the first time.
Clarence Adams had a very good record on the way up.

Lv it the way some dolts feel free to put others down on this site, instead of constructive criticism. If it wasn't for the bullshit they are full of the hot air would simply float them away, hopefully. ![[icon_shame.gif] :shame:](./images/smilies/icon_shame.gif)

I'm fullay aware of Pacquiaos acheivements. Very impressive.
But there's good, great and all time great.
Pacquiao is great, at his best he was devastating, his accomplishments and record are fantastic.
But best record ever? Don't be silly.
Go look at the records of Robinson, Armstrong, Langford, Greb, Pep, Moore, Charles.
I could go on at length here to dismatle the assertion that it's "never been done before" but it's been a long day and I quite frankly can't be arsed wasting my time on it.
Just to say. Many boxers have done things that no other has done. Just google the names above. All have acheivements that match or better that of Mannny.
Beating the best puerto rican in the last 7 years....
Deary me
dude, i know boxing. go look in boxrec at the records of the guys you mentioned!!! 80 % of the opponents they had were sparring partners with 3-5-2 records. imagine pac or ggg boxing every 3 weeks against a cab driver, ggg would be something like 104-0-0, just like chavez build his career beating 80 tomato cans before facing quality and than having an atg record with over 100 fights. dont let record foul you.
i say it again. climbing 10 freaking division, beating the big names he beat is more than atg material, its top 10 ever, top of the top!!!
morales, barrera, marquez, oscar and mosley are also legends

Jeff Chandler, Aaron Pryor, and Michael Spinks had great records until drugs and Mike Tyson kicked in.

Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Or Gene Tunney? His only loss was to Greb, and he beat Greb 3 or 4 times after that to end up something like 67-1.jezzamundo wrote:How is Harry Greb not an option?

Re: Which Boxer had the best record ever?
Ali without doubt.
Faced 3 career ending monsters in Liston, Foreman, and Shavers. Avoided no one apart from Stevenson who was unwilling to fight as a pro.
Both Sugar Ray's are also up there with Hagler, but they didn't take the same risks. GGG is getting there but running out of time and opposition.
Also good to see Crawford finally unifying a division after 12 long years.

I have never been Floyd's fan, but it is funny to not see him as an option. Looks like censorship.
