Khan v GGG

Post by SteveDow »

If Khan beats Canelo (a very big if), will he fight GGG in a unification fight at 160lbs?

I'm not asking who wins this fight as I personally think the first big shot GGG landed Khan would be poleaxed, rather I'm asking whether Khan would take the fight?

My view is that actually he would be more likely to take it than Canelo would. I don't think anyone can really accuse Khan of being anything other than a very brave guy in the ring and I'm sure in his own mind he would fancy the job should he get past Canelo. Clearly the money would hardly be a deterrant either!

Thoughts?

I think he's certainly more likely to take it than Canelo.

This. Although this can be used as an excuse. He was willing to face Mayweather but at what cost?

Would he face GGG for a majority split of a big purse, more than likely. Would he fight for a smaller percentage of the purse? I doubt it.

Does he have a right to the majority of the split, personally i would say no.

It's this type of situation that can make a fighter look braver than they appear. BJS wants GGG but wants millions, Margarito wanted Mayweather but for millions etc etc

He's got the balls to fight anyone but he'd want and deserve silly money for it.

Do you think he would deserve more money than GGG who is the star of the fight?

Maybe - only one of them would be in danger of being seriously hurt, and it's not GGG. Khan would be mad to face Golovkin without a huge payday.

Anyone that gets in with GGG must believe In themselves and all fighters have a punchers chance. Khan will take the shot and the fight will happen but I believe GGG is just getting better, a lot of people think he is all about the power but the man can box and has a good tactical mind he does not boast or misbehave outside the ring and shows respect to other fighters a gentleman of older times. Don't believe he is beatable at the moment

Even Khan knows his limits. He'll be getting very well paid for the Canelo fight and is already a rich man. Even a shot on the gloves from GGG would have Khan staggering about.

He will call out mayweather again firstly.

I'd say 50/50 would be fair.

That would be fair. I wonder what kind of weight the fight would be at if it were to happen. It wouldn't be at 160. Maybe 155 again? I personally think Alvarez will spark Khan but it'll be interesting if he were to win.

Really? In one corner you have a fighter considered one of the best on the planet. In the other, you have Khan who has never even been no1 in a weight division.

If people think he should be paid well for stepping in the ring to take a hiding then he shouldn't be allowed to fight in my view

Fighters don't get paid based on their ability, 50/50 would be being generous to Golovkin really.

It's all about who draws the punters in and brings in revenue.

David Haye filled the 02 arena fighting a complete stiff - go figure - doesn't make him the best heavyweight in the world, but he's clearly a draw.

Haye would probably get the lion share of the purse fighting anyone other than Wlad and maybe Fury.

I don't disagree with you both on that. What I disagree on is that Khan is an A side draw. In his biggest UK fight he was the b side.

GGG is a much bigger draw

For all his accolades GGG has never really fought anyone, obviously it isn't his fault as every decent fighter around his weight is too shite scared to get in with him, Khan has fought far better opposition.

He might have got in the ring with a better list of fighters but I wouldn't say that he has beaten a better level of opponent. In maidana he has the edge on best level of victory.

Based on what precisely?

Khan undoubtedly has a bigger fanbase than GGG - who is only just starting to make it as a genuine big name.

Khan has had massive exposure since day 1 of his pro career in the UK - and that makes him a draw. Simple as.

Khan doesn't have a big fan base but he is a big name Khan isn't a headliner who sells tickets. He's a good opponent for any fighter out there and adds a bit to a card because of his name but Khan v a n other doesn't sell on its on.

The americans are happy to watch him as he can be in exciting fights but they don't think he's a star. Over here he's a big name too but not many consider him a world star or one of the best. Him v a standard level opponent in the UK won't sell out an arena but him and brook could do a stadium. I'm not saying brook is a mega star either. He has to work hard to sell tickets in the UK but also adds a lot to a Khan fight.

His last fight against Algieri was a Friday night effort. Hardly box office. If he beats Canelo though I'm all for him getting a fair split against GGG should he decide to take the fight. All ifs and buts....

As has been said, if Khan beats Alvarez his first priority will be to try and lure Mayweather into his 50th bout.
I do think that Khan would be brave enough to take on Golovkin, especially having beaten Alvarez, but probably at 155.
If that were to happen I would expect nothing other than a 50/50 purse split.
Golovkin is not a draw. I agree that he should be and I imagine that if he spoke excellent English then he would be, but he doesn't and isn't. Outside boxing fans he is unknown, Khan is known to the general public and certainly creates more revenue than GGG, or are we suggesting that GGG has earned more?
