Janette, Mcvey , Langford, Jefferies, Fitsimmons, Ketchell, Phil Jack Obrien, Id say Johnson.

ya but jeanette was green when johnson fought him, mcvey was only 18 and green, langford was only 155lb and not yet at his heavyweight prime, fitzimmons was 41 and supposedly was shot having nothing left when he fought johnson, ketchell was a great fighter but a middleweight, and philadelphia jack o brien was only 160lb.

Just by going by those names it it seems that Johnson had better competition.
However that list is very decieving. Jeanette, McVey and Langford were all relatively inexperienced when they fought Johnson.
Fitzsimmons was over 50 years old! Jeffries hadn't fought in more than 5 years!
Ketchel was a middleweight, and OBrien was basically a lightheavyweight. (although he was competitive with some good heavyweights).

It's probably pretty close between Dempsey and Johnson.

Decagon wrote:Johnson, by far. Jack Dempsey could have fought better fighters, but he ducked Langford, Moran and Smith in 1917, and the fight with Wills didn't come off. Oh, and he was damn inactive for a "champion."

dempsey beat gunboat smith twice!

Johnson, by far.

please tell me how?
