Too Much the Gentleman Gerry Cooney?

Post by Cap »

If this hasn't already been done to death, what does everyone think Cooney might have done differently if he had had Angelo Dundee or Ray Arcel as a trainer? He was a converted southpaw who never seemed to learn how to use both hands. Was he just an over-hyped one-trick pony or could he have been moulded into something much better?

But what about Corrie Sanders if he had been in shape? Or Mike Tyson if he had stuck with Kevin Rooney?

It has been done to the point where Cooney is one of the most overrated fighters in history.

He achieved all he could. Like Judah, but not as good.

Cooney over achieved to be fair world title challenge for an average heavyweight which is pretty good.

Cooney wasn't a bum today he would be threat to just about any Heavyweight around but Wlad would probably have his measure, He[Cooney]happen to run into a Legend when he Challenged for the title and he gave a decent account of himself until fatigue and the class of Holmes caught up to him :TU:

and dont forget the (Illegal)smelling salts that Chickie Ferrera gave Holmes in between rounds to save him from being knocked out.

George Foreman said Cooney was one of the hardest punchers he ever faced. Cooney had the misfortune of having to face one of the better champions in Larry Holmes. Though they were past their prime he utterly destroyed Lyle, Young and Norton.
Would have loved to see how he woiuld have done with Emmanuel Steward training him.

If Wladimir was terrified of Tyson Fury's 'punch', how would he respond to Gerry Cooney's crippling power? Say what you want about the man's career choices, opportunities, personality etc, but the power was real and horrifying. This isn't Tony Thompson or Pulev swinging at Wlad.

Didn't do him any good when he stepped up, you can be the biggest puncher of all time but without the skills to deliver it isn't worth a wank.?

He nearly killed Holmes and Foreman with his hook. If you can watch Holmes/Cooney and come away from it thinking he was an "average heavyweight" and without the skills to deliver a punch you're an obvious cretin.

The guy was was beautifully managed as the new great white heavyweight hope (dope) who came a cropper when faced with the best fact. I think even he admitted he wasn't much good and didn't really want to become a boxer but was told he could earn a load of bucks if he did, he was just a big average heavyweight who over achieved. Sorry you don't agree.

The facts don't agree with your account of Cooney. His great fight with Holmes, a man in most peoples' all-time heavyweight top 5, speaks for itself. Meanwhile you have to fabricate stories, such as Cooney 'admitting he wasn't much good.' Pure drivel.

The question was could Cooney have gone further in his career if a new trainer had forced him to use his right hand more when he was still young enough to adapt. Victor Valle was just about the worst guy Cooney could have had as chief trainer. He babied Cooney along, never forced him to work outside his comfort zone.

Great fight? Lmao, this is the stuff in talking about. Oddly, the best thing he ever did in the ring was Chaplin and his fans never mention it.
