Carter's record is : Won 27 (KOs 19) | Lost 12 | Drawn 1 | Tot 40 |

Carter was TKO'd by Jose Gonzalez in six rounds.

Carter lost ten round decisions to Luis Rodriguez TWICE.

Carter also lost ten round decisions to Rocky Rivero, Stan Harrington, Johnny Morris, Harry Scott, and Joey Archer.

Carter also lost an 8 round decision to Ernest Buford and a 6 round decision to Herschell Jacobs.

Carter was a docile loser to champion Joey Giardello in a 15 round title fight. Carter was badly outclassed by the experienced Giardello.

Dick Tiger wiped up the ring with Carter, knocking Carter three times in winning a LOPSIDED ten round decision over a completely outclassed Carter.

In his loss to Tiger, Carter got help from stooge referee Zack Clayton.

After Tiger knocked Carter down twice in one round (three knockdowns would have been an automatic TKO) referee Clayton shortened the round by one minute and motioned Carter to his corner.
(This is verifiable on the tape of the fight. The round lasts only two minutes. All the other rounds last three minutes.)

As Clayton appears to stop the fight, Tiger raises his hands in victory---then looks confused. Tiger's cornermen persuade him to come and sit in his corner and then resume the fight.

Carter was a drawing card for Madison Square Garden at the time and that is how they worked to protect their product.

Carter lost eight out of his last 14 fights.
All true, and I've seen the Tiger-Carter fight.

You could also add that Carter was floored and given a tough fight by an aging Holly Mims, who took the fight on one day's notice.

He did have a few big wins (his 1st round KO of Emile Griffith, and he beat Georgie Benton at a time when no one wanted to fight Benton)... but other than that he lost almost every time he stepped up his level of competition.

once upon a time there was a hot prospect named Willie Troy. 19 and 0 and he was put in against Holly Mims....a beautifully talented unheralded fighter, and Troy became 19 and 1 (kayo by 8). When Holly was 22 (not 19, but who's counting,) he was matched with Sugar Ray in one of the sugarman's non-title encounters. Mims had fought Ray's own policeman (Gene Burton) and Mims, some say, did not try his best, which made him seem easy pickings for Robinson. As Terap says, he gave him a pip of a fight, and Robinson had to turn on the steam late to pull out a close decision. more than one writer Mims was one of those fighters who, on any given night, was capable of beating anybody he fought. He actually fought a lot after this one, with some good wins. In addition to Troy, he beat lester Felton,Georgie Benton, Henry Hank and others. plus, ended his career with a win , which more journeymen don't than do. list him with the underrated and virtually forgotten. Note: not on his record....Rematch with Ray Robinson. As the saying goes, Ray might have thought..."fool me once, shame on you."..and you know the rest.

I'm sorry, but what do you guys mean when you refer to "policemen"?

Anyway, this is all very fascinating and informative. Here's what I have to add:

Holly Mims, when he was WAY past his prime - about 15 years after he fought Robinson - was matched with Joey Archer when Archer was the top contender and in line for a title shot. Mims pummeled Archer for 10 rounds and lost what has to be one of the most blatant robberies in history. I mean, Mims just kicked the crap out of him in at least 8 out of 10 rounds. Archer's own fans booed the decision and tossed rubbish into the ring.

As for Willie Troy, he was a big puncher, but I think he had too many wars too early in his career. He supposedly had a war with another hot prospect (Moses Ward?) and then got beat up by Giardello.

BTW, the Mims fight was Ray's very next fight after winning the title from LaMotta. Ray was just looking for an easy fight after the LaMotta war. Oops!

Re: Willie Troy - the younger boxing fans may not realize that a fellow with a 19-0 record was just a rookie then.....not ready for seasoned talented fighters. Today, you can be 19-0 and already be stripped of two titles and hold another one. Thanks, Hawk for the additional info on both Troy and Mims.

Yeah, the Sugarman took Mims too lightly. That wouldn't have been the case in a rematch.

policeman? The best example I know is Gene Burton, who was Robinson's policeman. He was a welterweight, solid craftsman. If there was a fighter who might be eligible for a match with Sugar Ray, Burton would fight him, study his style, tell Robinson if he could punch, take a punch, etc., thus "investigating" or "policeing the field. Hope I've written well enough to make this clear.

some of Teraps comments are right on, others are open to debate.

One is not. Archie Moore was never...repeat in caps..NEVER..a policeman. He did beat the hell out of a lot of them, though, which was a big reason he had to wait so long to get his title shot.

CARTER HAD A SOLID PUNCH AND NOT MUCH ELSE. LUIS RODRIGUEZ BEAT HIM TWICE. LUIS TOLD ME THAT CARTER PUT HIM ON DECK AND THAT THE HURRICANE WAS A SOLID BANGER, BUT ALSO SLOW AND EASY TO TAME ONCE YOU FRUSTRATED HIM WITH A LITTLE FINESSE.

HOLLY MIMS WAS A VERY GOOD MIDDLEWEIGHT AND A VERY DECENT MAN. HE WAS A POSTAL WORKER AND DIED OF CANCER AT A YOUNG AGE.

bollocks...That was Joey Giardello. I believe he sued and was awarded an out of court settlement?
