Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
As boring as his persona is, the media are turning theiri attention towards him as the #1 fighter in the sport! Barerra isn't even well known and look
at the turn out for Ward's media day. Damn.....Look at the cameras in his face! http://www.fightnews.com/Boxing/ward-ba ... tos-329862

I'm a little surprised to see this
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
I hope it's a good scrap, Ward has skill to burn though - hope Barerra can cope and make a fight that makes his name.
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
This fight won't establish him as the #1 P4P guy, but it will probably put him back in the Top 5 which he would've stayed at anyhow had he not been so inactive. The fight with Kovalev will put the winner at the top.

Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
I counted about fourteen cameras. That is a huge amount of cameras for Ward

How does beating this guy put him up so high?gilgamesh wrote:This fight won't establish him as the #1 P4P guy, but it will probably put him back in the Top 5 which he would've stayed at anyhow had he not been so inactive. The fight with Kovalev will put the winner at the top.
Barrera is only ranked No. 23 at light heavyweight by BoxRec.
I don't think that Ward deserves a top 10 P4P spot until he at least beats another world class opponent. Something that he hasn't done in years.
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
This is due to the fact that the US just has a lack of talent in boxing overall. Ward is getting additional cameras and attention due to the lack of talent in the country. The USA is turning their hopes to Ward to rescue USA boxing. There are some others like Crawford, Porter and Spence but with Mayweather gone this is what it has come to. Ward has barely fought over the past four years and hasn't really beaten anyone in those 4 years either.bnovelist wrote:As boring as his persona is, the media are turning theiri attention towards him as the #1 fighter in the sport! Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
He was undisputed the #2 P4P guy in the world not so long ago. And he hasn't lost that ranking in the ring.
So, of course the media might start paying more attention to him as his showdown with the current number one or number 2 guy gets closer.
The attention is justified and warranted if you cover the sport.
Not rocket science, folks

It's also a bit of a lull in the boxing schedule.koolkc107 wrote:He was undisputed the #2 P4P guy in the world not so long ago. And he hasn't lost that ranking in the ring.

Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
It puts him up so high because he would've already been #2 or #1 to begin with. The only reason he's not is the inactivity. His career and talent is already proven, he just needs to be more active going forward.Horse wrote:How does beating this guy put him up so high?gilgamesh wrote:This fight won't establish him as the #1 P4P guy, but it will probably put him back in the Top 5 which he would've stayed at anyhow had he not been so inactive. He was proven 4 years ago. He might be washed up now.gilgamesh wrote:It puts him up so high because he would've already been #2 or #1 to begin with. The only reason he's not is the inactivity. His career and talent is already proven, he just needs to be more active going forward.
Beating a nobody like Barrera is worth very little at P4P level.
Ward should have to earn his P4P ranking again.
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
He didn't look washed up last time out. We'll see how he looks vs Barrera. Beating Barrera certainly isn't going to raise Ward's stock any, but it'll allow him a chance to shake off some rust, and for Barrera this a huge opportunity to get out of the doldrums and into the limelight so he'll likely be coming with all he's got.Horse wrote:He was proven 4 years ago. Sullivan Barrera: “Andre Ward has his name and I’m fighting in his hometown so I have to have the knockout. I would have to even if we were fighting in Las Vegas. More than anything, I am determined to overcome this challenge.”
I don't agree that Barrera has to win by KO but I think he's saying this because he knows he cannot outbox Ward.
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
He has to win decisively. And he knows that. People from the US notice when Americans go overseas and get ripped off but they don't say anything when a foreigner comes to the states and loses a decision. That is when HBO breaks out with their "You have to take the title from the champion". He is right. Do you know how much money is on the line here? Ward's HBO contract and the upcoming fight with Kovalev as well. Boxing follows the money and Barrera will not get any kind of close decision. He knows that going in.Undefeated49-0 wrote:Sullivan Barrera: “Andre Ward has his name and I’m fighting in his hometown so I have to have the knockout. WTF you have to always interject some BS?? (rhetorical). More US Fighters have gotten ripped off on decisions overseas than has happened here in the US.
We understand you do not like us (US Americans) then get the hell off of this forum and stay on your own, or better yet, stop watching boxing because there will always be Americans in it like it or not.
Yes Barrera has to win decisively but so would any fighter who's facing someone who has been a known champion and a P4Per as well as undefeated but this has nothing to do with being an American.
Do they rip off Chocolatito or Canelo when they beat an American??
No!! Then GTFO here.

Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
The attention on Ward in increasing mostly due to the Kovalev fight on the horizon.
The US Tv Chiefs know when the match up happens it had the potential to be huge.
2nd biggest fight in boxing at the moment behind Canelo-GGG and ahead of Wilder-Fury.

He's saying it because he's the underdog and he knows a decision will go Wards way regardless.Undefeated49-0 wrote:Sullivan Barrera: “Andre Ward has his name and I’m fighting in his hometown so I have to have the knockout. Whether he believes he can win a decision or not is a different question.

and perhaps competitiveness as well.
It will be for P4P #1 in the world.
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
Hey I spoke the truth and I could sit here and name many dubious decisions that the US fighter has been given the nod over a non US fighter. I already acknowledged that it happens overseas. Why don't you learn how to read. Like I said earlier the US has so few elite fighters these days that you are going to defend them as if they were your children. That is what USA boxing has come to. Especially in Ward;s hometown. He is gonna need a KO. That is even against a guy who has barely fought over 4 years and is still somehow considered one of the P4P best in your eyes. Based on what that Super 6 joke of a tournament?Undefeated49-0 wrote:Lancenix wrote:He has to win decisively. And he knows that. Only a US ranking?Lancenix wrote:ikorolev wrote:I bet Jay Z paid for some of these journalists to comeGood point I did not even think of that. Ward's p4P ranking is only a US ranking not a worldwide ranking. He has not beaten anyone in over 4 years.
#4 on Ring's list
#6 on ESPN's list
#3 on BS
#4 on SI
#3 on Boxing News
I'd say the world consensus is that, even now with limited activity, Ward is still top 5.
And that is deserved.
Re: Ward! I Can't Believe My Eyes!
Ward is a top class boxer and athlete, much of the inactivity has been out of his hands, last time I watched him he was about punch perfect and the limited (at world level) was competitive v Abraham.
