Bully boy Roy Jones knocks novice out in his 1st pro fight
Re: Bully boy Roy Jones knocks novice out in his 1st pro fight
In 2003, as a 34 year old with a 48-1 record, after becoming WBA Heavyweight champion and at the pinnacle of his career, who would have thought that 13 years on Jones would be still fighting, despite suffering 8 more losses and being put to sleep multiple times.
Re: Bully boy Roy Jones knocks novice out in his 1st pro fight
He really did seem almost untouchable at that stage. He seems to be doing his best to tarnish his legacy. You could argue that he already has with all the PED stuff. He was an icon of the sport and now he's became a bit of a laughing stock. Sad to see.johnswan1 wrote:In 2003, as a 34 year old with a 48-1 record, after becoming WBA Heavyweight champion and at the pinnacle of his career, who would have thought that 13 years on Jones would be still fighting, despite suffering 8 more losses and being put to sleep multiple times.

Just shows you, it's often the very best that struggle to call it a day and find life after boxing.
Roy seems intent on fighting on until he simply isn't able to any more - it's sad to see. He made so much money in his career too.

Not if that was the outcome I wouldn't - and that would be the outcome. I'd have probably been in intensive care if I took that shot.Boxerbeetle wrote:How many of us would jump at the opportunity to win $100k by fighting RJJ? I know I would![]()
Re: Bully boy Roy Jones knocks novice out in his 1st pro fight
True. Maybe take him on if you're guaranteed 100k just to turn up but not to win. You're on a hiding to nothing there!jamesmcdonnell wrote:Not if that was the outcome I wouldn't - and that would be the outcome. His story seems to be going along the lines of 'The Wrestler'. They just have no life outside of the sport they live(d) for. It'll take one of these faded old champs to get seriously hurt to stop this nonsense. Enzo smashed him up, it could happen any time.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Just shows you, it's often the very best that struggle to call it a day and find life after boxing.

Unfortunately boxing is littered with past it fighters getting smashed up. Nothing will ever stop fighters from fighting too long except some form of regulation which is not a good thing either. Sadly it's just the nature of it really.TheCobra wrote:His story seems to be going along the lines of 'The Wrestler'. They just have no life outside of the sport they live(d) for. Roy Jones Jr v Vyron Phillips.
I'm reading that Vyron Phillips who RJJ beat in one round last week was the winner of a competion with over 1500 entrants for 'fans' of RJJ to enter in hope of fighting him. If the fan won he would have collected $100,000.
This is a disgrace and RJJ should be ashamed of himself, this is a all time low imo of a 'legend'

It's a real shame that Sergey Kovalev didn't enter himself into that competition & win.mimmy123 wrote:I'm reading that Vyron Phillips who RJJ beat in one round last week was the winner of a competion with over 1500 entrants for 'fans' of RJJ to enter in hope of fighting him. Kovalev would have sent Jones Jr into retirement for sure.
Roy has become a real embarrassment & it's something I'd never thought I'd see, due to the fact that he was so dazzling & awe inspiring to watch in his heyday.

Drug cheat. As soon as he was busted he was done.

Oh well, he still boxed an all time great, which he can tell his grand kids so not that bad, worth a go I say.

Didn't Foreman do a similar thing with 5 in one night exhibition once? I bet them opponents still talk about that night, if they are alive that is?

Yes but they were all pro fighters, if not good ones. Jones ko'd someone who had never had a pro fight beforeRexob wrote:Didn't Foreman do a similar thing with 5 in one night exhibition once? I bet them opponents still talk about that night, if they are alive that is?

Also any 'legend' with a bit of sense would have danced round the ring and not hit a competition winner, no Jones knocks him the fcuk out.reggaereggae wrote:Yes but they were all pro fighters, if not good ones. Exactly. It might as well be ten dollars, or ten billion dollars. I'm not going to be seeing any of it.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Not if that was the outcome I wouldn't - and that would be the outcome. You would be stupid not to have a go.
Re: Bully boy Roy Jones knocks novice out in his 1st pro fight
If anyone is to blame it is the guy himself not RJJ.

Really? Having a go against a former world champ is going to end badly, unless you're pretty good full time amateur boxer.Rexob wrote:You would be stupid not to have a go.

Risk vs reward! He obviously thought he could beat an over the hill former champ, he came unstuck and would have done the same to RJJ if he had the chance,, still a great story to tell even if he did get nailed to the floor, don't you think?
Re: Bully boy Roy Jones knocks novice out in his 1st pro fight
When jones was 2-0 this guy would have been a perfectly acceptable opponent for the olympic star. The 2-0 jones was a much better fighter than this jones. If jones wants to fight novices then he can. The novice was healthy and in shape. I'd rather see jones fight him than another 50-year-old.
