I'm pretty sure that he struggled to make the 9st 4lb limit for the last few years and actually collapsed after 1 fight even though he won and it was determined that it was because of the weight making. Wish him the best in the future but tbh I see him as a gatekeeper at Lightweight rather than a contender.

Gary still has him name to trade off, he just isn't big and powerful enough to beat a big lightweight. He was a good box fighter in his prime and has a lot of guts, I think he's got a well paid job so maybe won't want to be a gatekeeper.

I've always liked Sykes. Neat little boxer, but he looked way out of his depth and I was quite surprised how easily he was dispatched. I can't see him being happy as a gatekeeper at lightweight, wouldn't be surprised to see him call it a day.

I liked how he rematched Buckland after being knocked out in 1 by him, that showed a lot of class and pride and I was pleased he went the 12.

I remember in his next fight after that loss, against Johansson. He got put down heavy late on. I thought it was over but he came back well. The 2nd Buckland fight was close, too.

He's been a good servant to British boxing, had a good career although I did feel at one point he might go on to slightly better things than he did, e.g. Euro level etc. He beat Crolla and got the British title and then it came off the rails a bit with the Buckland KO. Think he won 4 British Super Feather title fights so he should have a Lonsdale belt I think? Nice achievement if so, something anyone can be well proud of.

He certainly didn't look to have the ammo to deal with Campbell or keep him at bay in any way, so I do wonder what there is left for him now at 32 after a 10 year pro career. I don't think he's 'shot' by any means, Luke Campbell is a level above domestic class so possibly one more shot at a lower level (English title?) at lightweight and see what he comes up with if he can still motivate himself.

Style wise Sykes was hand picked for the Olympian, and they knew he was a much smaller man at the tail end of his career.
You won't see him matched against the French fella again unless it is at 48 hours notice and I don't think he will ever be matched against someone with his style again either.

He has 4 British title wins. But non against a mandatory which I believe has to be one to get to keep the belt outright

Yeh seems pretty harsh, I thought it was just 4 British title wins. Didn't realise there was also the mandatory clause in there. It's hard enough to win 4 British title fights as it is, I think times must be getting hard at BBBC, feel sorry for the lad as he thought he was gona get a Lonsdale.

On the link posted earlier for check hook boxing. A member of his training team back then posted all about it. He did have a mandatory fight fall thru on fight week but board didn't recognise the replacement as a mandatory and it became a voluntary. Shame. As for his career his been in some great fights done well domestic and nearly got the borner fight. I'd like to see him retire.

Dunno if John Smpsons coming back or what's happening but him and Sykes at SuperFeather would be a cracking domestic scrap.

It wud have been a good fight 2-3 years ago. Sykes struggles to make super feathe and Simpson has been very inactive after taking a couple of pay days at lightweight

I really really hope Gary doesn't fight against. He has very low punch resistance now and he is going to end up getting hurt.. I have always been a big fan but it's time to get out. I'm sure his old coaching team asked him to retire and wouldn't continue. Hopefully he gets out with his health

I was really shocked at how quick Campbell finished him.
Really enjoyed him as a British champion he's a tough tough fella.

I'd say keep going at English/commonwealth level but if his punch resistance has gone I hope he hangs them up.

Campbell is a level above domestic and I fancy him to beat Cardle with ease.

Gary was a very good amateur and him and Stephen Smith would have been a great scrap.
