Eubank Sr, truth or lie?

Post by Mimmy »

On the news today Mr Eubank has said that he told his son to go for the body rather than the head as he was worried about the damage that Jr could have done.

Now When I watched the fight I heard Sr say to Jr go for the body. But I do not think it meant what he is now saying. I was thinking at the time that he was giving this info to Jr as to wear Blackwell down to the body rather than the head as the head shots were not going to knock Blackwell out.

Im not sure that Eubank was giving that ino as a worrying warning.

What do you guys thinK?

I think he meant it the way he is now saying. He was shocked and annoyed that ref wasn't going to stop it. '

Sr felt the flashy multi punch combo's should have resulted in the ref jumping in. My understanding during the fight was that Sr was telling him that the ref was not going to stop the fight from head shots so to take the stoppage decision into his own hands by going to the body. I didn't think he was saying "don't hit him in the face anymore in case he gets hurt" as the media have been making out.

It seemed to me more that he was realising Jr was never going to KO Blackwell by headshots but he might by bodyshots. I think his focus was more on Jr winning the fight the quickest and best way possible than Blackwell's safety.

I remember watching and thinking, this is not the best way to give advice during a fight. It wasn't entirely clear what he was saying so I'm happy to accept his clarifications as true.

I don`t believe him at all.His advice was pertaining to Jr winning the fight, not Nick`s long-term health

Complete BS. He wanted the stoppage and was concerned about the decision not going their way despite how one sided it was. He said "Number one he will get hurt and number two it will go to a decision". Now what the actual feck has a decision got to do with the wellbeing of the other fighter? It does not fit at all.

Moving on. Son continued to hit the opponent, targetting the head. He was so concerned and compassionate that he did zero in the round, no shouting at Jnr to stop doing it. Then the next break he again reiterated his worry of it going to a decision and then added, "get him out of there" or "take him out" ( i forget which exactly). Hardly that concerned.

Compassion would have been refusing to fight on and refusing to hit the lad again and demanding he sought medical attention. Compassion is not standing in a corner watching your son continue to hit him in the head when suspecting serious damage

Can you tell me about a single incident in the history of boxing where a trainer has urged his fighter to show compassion to his opponent in this way you describe?

I think at the time Eubank thought a KO was more likely to come from a body shot hence the instruction of targeting the body.

Imo his advice was given as a tactical insight rather than to protect Blackwell from headshots. Similarly I feel that his banging on the apron during the fight to implore the ref to stop the fight, for which I think he was warned, was motivated by a desire to see Jr rather than spare Nick further punishment.

I'm sure his heart's in the right place but Eubank is a man seemingly incapable of living without the limelight on him and he wouldn't want to miss any opportunity to have that limelight shine glowingly on him for an act of supposed magnanimity.

There is no doubt that Eubank snr held off really punishing fighters later in his career after the Watson fight. I think it was both a concerned and was making a tactical referrence to what he fought would be more effective when he was talking the jr in the corner.

He was concerned that the referee hadn't stopped the fight (I personally fought victor did a very good job that night and made the right decision to call the doctor in at the right time, without hindsight) but he wanted to see his son get the stoppage, I think he felt the body shots would do the job rather than head hunting. He said the same about chudinov and I don't think it is just from a selfish perspective, he's not a nut who feels no remorse for what happened to Watson, he worries for the safety of other fighters.

I guarantee that if Eubank jr ever takes a heavy sustained beating snr will be the first guy to throw the towel in.

Eubank jr was deliberately baiting the ref to stop the fight after he saw the state of blackwells eye imo.he was show boating but could have landed shots if he wanted too with relative ease.

relevance is what?

If people want to highlight a very rare act of compassion across the newspaper and on news outlets, it kind of suggests it is not the norm, so there would not be previous example of much compassion. Logic.

BJS, who i admit is a bit of a tit, makes my exact points on a IFL TV interview, all of my points of the last couple days. So I am hardly making shit up that would not occur to anyone else

As much of a prat as Eubank Sr can be, he's not without compassion, and lord alone knows how many sleepless nights he endured after what happened to Michael Watson - very few fighters (Roberto Duran springs to mind) willingly inflict lasting and irreversible damage on their opponents, certainly after the heat of the moment has passed.

It was a very strange resonance hearing Eubank in the corner during the fight - and what ensued. I'm sure Sr wishes the fight with Watson was stopped a little sooner, though I suspect that the damage was done when he landed that huge uppercut, Watson was completely out of it from that point on.

Eubank is a complex character, part popinjay, cod philosopher, warrior, lover...Ok ignore that last one, but my point is, he is capable of meaning every word he said to Jr, wanting him to both get his opponent out of there for his own good, and the good of his opponent, and also enjoying the fact it makes him like look like a real good egg. He probably imagines there's a camera in the room when he's having a shit.

I think he meant it as a tactical move.

He may have been concerned about Nick getting hurt as well & is now remembering that feeling so running with it.

We always like to look back at events & remember ourselves in the best possible light. That's natural (ok, maybe not for everybody).

What a load of rubbish. Eubank Snr was telling his son to go to the body to weaken Blackwell and bring his hands down so that he could apply the finish.

Eubank Snr was a tough and excellent fighter, his son is good, but will never match his father. But if he told me the sun was shining I'd need to go outside to check. As well as telling the media how 'caring' he was towards Blackwell he also boasted about how lethal a puncher his son was.

As I have said elsewhere on here.
1. Jnr wasn't going to lose.
2. Snr can clearly be heard telling jnr to stop punches to the head or he's going to get hurt.
3. The ref stopped the fight to tell snr (who was on the edge of the ring shouting at the ref and banging the canvas to stop the fight) to get of the edge of the ring.
4. Round six during the two main onslaughts from Jnr there where at least ten punches landed with out return each time, ample for the ref to have stopped the fight.
5. Blackwells corner failed to notice he was not paying any attention to them after round six as can be clearly seen.
I have been told in the past that more often than not just looking into the eyes of a fighter can tell you if there is a problem.
Snr wanted the fight to be stopped and the only way to stop the fight if the ref wasn't going to was body shots.
Just my opinion.

Jnr didn't need to bring the hands down to land punches he was gettin through the guard quite regularly with the guard up.

Did you not hear snr say if you keep hitting the head he was going to get hurt and as the ref wasn't stopping the fight he would have to go to the boddy to finish it.
