I wouldn't mind if he fought Monaghan. He's not the best opponent out there, but he's ranked in all ABC's and style wise it would make for a fun fight.

What did Monaghan ever do to you?

I just figure he says he's always looking for a top fight. It's a good payday for him, an acceptable tv opponent for Kovalev, and a good style fight for the fans.

If he was always looking for top opponents, he would have found one in his first 27 fights. He hasn't fought anybody from boxrec top 50.

Chilemba seems like a fitting opponent.

It's a pretty terrible fight for Monaghan if he values his health.

It's a terrible fight for most guys in all honesty as far as chances of winning. It will be a good payday for him. At 34 years old and 27 fights, what's the end game for your career if it's not a big payday and a shot at a belt? Just my thinking, I guess.....

I think Chilemba is a better fighter than Monaghan, but style wise, it will be a more exciting fight with Monaghan....

I honestly don't know how it would have worked. Haymon was obviously intending on putting the fight on Showtime or one of the other PBC-friendly channels like ESPN/NBC/CBS. I suppose if the fight had gone ahead, Kovalev and Duva would have been in breach of contract with HBO and there would have been lawsuits. It's possible HBO could have gotten an injunction and prevented the fight from happening at all. I'm not sure how ironclad those contracts between TV networks and individual fighters are.
Thank you for answering that for me. Much appreciated. :TU:
