David Haye pledges to donate 10 per cent of ticket sales to Nick Blackwell

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/boxing/2016/ ... s-to-nick/?

David Haye has pledged 10 per cent of the proceeds from ticket sales from his next bout against Arnold Gjergjaj to injured middleweight boxer Nick Blackwell, who remains in an induced coma after collapsing at the end of Saturday’s British middleweight title defeat to Chris Eubank Jnr.

Former world heavyweight champion Haye said: “I decided on this straightaway because of the reality of the situation now for Nick. It will be a miracle if the Boxing Board of Control ever allowed him to fight again with such a serious injury. His boxing career is almost certainly over.

“He has dedicated his life to the sport. I spoke to George Groves and Carl Froch who he worked with in sparring, and the guy is one of the toughest sparring partners around.”

Haye added: “How is he going to earn his money now? He was an apprentice bricklayer. He still has bills to pay. When he comes round, not being able to do his job will make things difficult.”

“I thought the least I could do is donate 10 per cent of the ticket sales to someone who has given so much. He gave everything in that fight".

Kudos to Haye. Speaking as someone who has had a brain Bleed it changes your life completely. Blackwell if he makes it, is going to have a long road ahead of him.

10% of the tickets sale? That's like 5% since Gjergjaj receives 50%, and then... The tickets sale? That's like 3 times nothing, he probably makes more money with this free advert as that 5% costs him... For me, this is pure marketing, got nothing to do with him beïng a nice guy, when the big money comes in he will probably put all of it in his pockets.

Given that he sold out the 02 last time, 10% of ticket sales will be significant, and if announcing it helps sell tickets,. then Blackwell will benefit too.

Of course he could have done it anonymously, but whatever, I'm sure Blackwell and his family will appreciate the money when it comes.

I'm a cynic too, but I'm prepared to give the man some credit where it's due.

Gjergjaj get 50% my left bollock, Haye is the promoter, he will get a fee for fighting and that's it. So what if it's marketing he's still doing a very nice thing that nobody would have expected him too. It could be a lot of money, if the average seat is £50 Nick could potentially get £100k which would be a massive help for him and his family.

Precisely, no way Gargleplex gets 50%, he'll be lucky to get 10%. Haye is totally in the driving seat, he is obviously bottom feeding knowing he can probably pay these guys 50k or less to get their arses kicked and then bugger off back home.

10% of overall ticket sales is going to be a big slice of wedge. Fair play to Haye, even if it is marketing, he's doing more for Blackwell than anyone else I'm aware of at least publically. It may also encourage others to contribute to him.

I'm usually pretty critical of Haye, but come on, let's be fair here.

Well done to Haye for donating the money to Blackwell, but he really has played blinder.

Whilst we're busy congratulating him on his admittedly fine gesture, we're all forgetting that he has lined up another daffodil to knock over in front of a large paying crowd.

I would much rather David had quietly given money to Blackwell & lined up a decent opponent that might actually hit him back.

Had he done so, he'd have made more more because he wasn't fighting another heavy bag & Blackwell would have benefited even more & he wouldn't have been open to criticism.
