A strength that's a weakness....

Post by davie »

I posted on the thread about adding an attribute to a certain fighter to make them great, that Calzaghe with good hands would have been even better, then countered my own argument by saying that perhaps Joes weak hands forced him to perfect the "slappy" combination punching style, that was pivotal in his career defining wins. It's kind of counter-intuitive to say improving something could make you worse and I'm doubting the logic behind my own point.
But it got me thinking, could a strength be a weakness?

For instance could you add an attribute to a fighter that would make them not as good?
Would giving Wlad an iron chin make him a devastating machine or would it have hindered him. The weakness forced him to change his approach to the game, a strong chin might have seen him persevere with a riskier style and he may never have dominated.
Equally giving Floyd some GGG power. Would he have bothered to master the dark arts of defensive fighting that made him the elusive master boxer he was? Would he have needed to or would he just have punched holes in people?

Another way to look at it is, could you improve someone by taking thier best attribute away.
If you stole Khans handspeed, would he be less inclined to throw the risky combinations that have so often got him in bother?
Or would he just be shit?

Naz was a defensive willow the wisp early on before he turned into a banger his power in some ways made him a lesser boxer

All strengths are a weakness, and all weaknesses are strengths Daniel-son.

Some fighters are better when they fear getting hit.

They become more effective when they fight scared.

Wlad being an obv example I suppose

There is no way of telling whether adding a strength would have a negative impact. You can have a big punch, high volume, granite chin and still be a top technician. GGG is an example of that.

Yeah true even when he wasn't throwing full bloodied shots and punching through the target he would land then kind of push through as he landed. That became a part of his 'defence'. A fair few fights he neglected his boxing and went into some contests solely relying on his power.

Generally speaking guys who don't carry much power tend to have very good stamina, as they are so used to going the distance and usually learn early on how to pace a fight properly.

Khan has a dodgy chin and limited defensive skills. So giving him a granite chin would only do him good.
I know that's not what you asked, I'm just making an observation.

That also may be because the lack of power indicates a lower percentage of fast twitch fibres to slow twitch, slow twitch being more associated with endurance, fast twitch power.

Very true, not every heavy handed fighter neglects technical ability or defensive movement. But you do wonder if some become lax because they know they have power to stop a fighter or the granite jaw to walk through punches

There's many possible reasons - punch power is partly genetics, but also a large part is good technique. Fighters that know they don't have great power, are more likely to concentrate on fights going the distance, and pace themselves better.

Big punchers exert more energy when they swing and miss also.

There's a myriad of factors at play. I

Except he didn't when he fought Fury.
We can all suppose what the advice of Emanuel Steward could have given Wlad, but he wasn't there and he retreated.

There's quite a few fighters who have really excellent chins where I've considered it a bit of a weakness for them, but only because they were so confident in their ability to take a shot that they had poor defense, and it wasn't all that hard to outbox them.

Even if you can take a shot, you're still gonna lose on points if you get hit way more than you hit the other guy.
