144 - 141 Turpin

A better fight than I had anticipated. Lot's of clinching, ugly, but it never spoiled it for me as they continued fighting up close and the exchanges proved pivotal on the outcome. Turpin landed plenty throughout from the clinches, particularly the right over Robinsons shoulder and Robinson landing well to the body in the second half of the fight.

Interesting was Turpin's style of dipping really low at the knees, almost in a split squat. Proved an excellent evasive tool and allowed him to launch some quick and powerful attacks from the crouched position that Ray never had an answer for. You would have though as he tired he would struggle with weary legs but he kept doing it all night.
In general, Turpin looked the more natural at middleweight and the stronger man and looked quicker too at times. Landed his jab well and worked well going backwards at times and on the front foot was able to push Robinson back.

Robinson was not at his best and certainly not the Robinson of his younger days at welterweight, but he was still a great fighter, who was still beating great fighters around that time so huge credit has to go to Turpin who out though and out fought his man. Must be the greatest result in British boxing history

*****Edit******* - If you intend scoring the fight, turn down the commentary.
There's nothing wrong with it but it's clearly recorded after the fight and the commentator has obviously analysed the fight and calls it very well, It can lead you a bit. If you're not going to score the fight, leave the sound on.

I havent watched the fight yet but i got all the issues of Boxer magazine a few weeks ago from a charity shop, they came out 20 years ago and it came with a video, each issue came out fortnightly

Anyways i just so happened to be up to issue 6 which is Turpin and it focuses on his 1st fight with Robinson mainly but also gave a short insight into his life and career,i knew he committed suicide by shooting himself but what i didnt know was that he also shot his youngest daughter twice before it,thankfully she survived

Clearly he had his demons but he seemed like a right nasty piece of work especially to woman,he also got done with rape but settled out of court, that doesnt make him guilty of that but there was also accusations from his ex wives of domestic violence

It's the same footage, same coverage, same commentary, just mine was split into 5 videos.

There's nothing wrong with it. But if you are going to score the fight round by round it could be quite leading.
It sounds as though it's more after fight analysis than actual at the time commentary

I watched the Mitri blowout earlier,Turpin got caught cold with a crunching left hook, with a little push right after to help him down flat on his back,he got up but his fell back the way i do after a few sherbets

Im afraid for me its another 1 of those "classic" fights which i didnt find much cop, dont get me wrong it was a great great win for Turpin and i had him winning 145-141,he started off excellent i had him sweeping the 1st 6 rounds before Robinson started to claw his way back and funnily enough for someone of Sugar Ray's skills thats when it started to get ugly, ive no doubt Robinson's tour of Europe played a part in his performance and he showed a champions resolve to try keep hold of his title but im sorry for me it was the same as all they fights from that era and before, too much mauling and spoiling for my liking,i appreciate Robinson's the greatest of all times,he certainly my favourite but i put these fights as the sport evolving

Maybe its the film?? But im glad ive watched it though and i'll watch the rematch tomorrow, although i think its only highlights available

144-142 Turpin

The commentary was obnoxious. I think I might have given Robinson a bit too much credit in the mid-to-late rounds, because I already had him so far behind and he was putting in more work.

Turpin seemed very muscular, a bit like a bodybuilder. Robinson was poor and looked weak, he certainly didn't look like the ATG that night.

Not a very entertaining fight, but it was certainly one of the most important fights in British boxing history, so it had to be shown at some point.

It is a widely held belief that Turpin committed suicide. However, there is a very strong theory that his former promoter had a say in the matter. In other words, Turpin was murderd because he was asking Mr S for money that he had earned in the ring but was never actually given because Mr S was "minding" it for him. If you find this implausible, I suggest you read a book by James Morton entitled "Fighters" or watch the documentary called " Randy Turpin 64 day hero".
