Callum Smith V George Groves

Post by Hinchy70 »

If this potential bout occurred who would you opt for? Personally I'd take Groves, Schooled Froch silly first time and I had him even or one up at the time of the KO at Wembley (iirc), he also has a win over JDG, which can be disputed, yet that was a highly motivated JDG, and their comparative opponents, Rebrasse, I think Groves did a far better job, plus the guy at the time was defending his belt, not sure of his losses at the time, may have been 1 or 2 max.

So what has Callum going for him? Power, lots of it seemingly, but we have seen durable opponents take him rounds, so he definitely carries it early but in the later rounds I still feel there is a question mark there to be answered. I do feel Callum would struggle with a mover, as he is a more polished SMW version of quigg, upright and a "hooker"

Never the less, this would be a cracking fight and probably could stand alone on a Saturday night or more likely end up on PPV as a Joshua support or a PPV on its own, *sigh*, I'd love to hear everyone's thoughts, preferably putting the Sky Hype and the Joe Gallagher drivel aside and seeing the fight for what it is. In Kell brooks famous words,

Hypothetically, if Groves was to reach the level he did against Froch then how would you see it going?

I'd expect Callum to stop him mid to late rounds probably close for first 4-6 rounds not much in it but when he hurts Groves which he would he seems a good finisher and I'd expect him to put him away!

Smith knocks him out brutally. Groves vs Smith, pre Froch fights would be a great fight, now I see Groves as a washed up fighter and Smith would hurt him I think.

I think A groves domination of Murray will sway the opinion, the worst George Groves still took Jack to a SD... There may be a few miles left on the clock yet

I dont think he will dominate Murray but I guess we'll see if that fight gets made.

It'll be a good competitive one sided fight, competitive in the sense Murray will always be active nicking the odd round, maybe a few late, but George jabbing his head off

You're only as good as your last fight so by that logic I'd fancy a Smith KO anytime in the first 6 rounds. I'd personally rather see Groves v Murray if George gets past Brophy. If the unthinkable happens on Sat and he loses I think it's time to sit down and have a serious think about his future.

If they boxed in 2016 Groves would win IMO, but I'd bet he'd have to climb off of the floor to do so. Groves is no slouch in the punch-power department, just ask the king-of-chins Carl Froch! Groves' experience is key to him winning too.

I think everyone is really discounting this, Callum would not be so quick to open up like he did with Rocky and The kid on Saturday, Groves is far more accurate and powerful

Groves has a fast accurate jab and skills a few levels above anyone Smith has ever fought too. I would love to see this fight and if Eddie and Gallagher were so confident as they say they are they would make this fight as Smith will have to wait nearly a year before he gets his title opportunity, this fight would generate good money so make the fight and prove your man will deal with Groves don't give us a barely European level guy as I expect Smith will get.

Gallagher used Groves' name for the past year to hype Smith up. Now the fight could be made he'll be back-tracking fast.
Too many on here seem to have written Groves off.

I think I've Groves beats Murray, we'll see Murray in with Smith to play the "Smith beat Murray in X rounds" triangle theories

Groves should beat Murray handily enough, Murray doesn't have the power to hurt him, nor the size or strength to really test his stamina.

I wouldn't rule Groves out, he's still a world level fighter.

I'd expect Callum to do it though, Groves is pretty chinny and I'd expect him to eventually get stopped.

Groves fought fairly closely with Jack last time out and I don't think he's done. Smith looks good and may well grind him down for a stoppage, but Callum has still shown flaws, has been extended several times despite his last two blowouts, and IMO hasn't fought anyone in the top 15....guys like Rebrasse, Fielding, Mouhmoudi, and Sjekoca are decent but in my view limited compared to Groves.

I think Groves would be much more capable of exploiting Callum's shortcomings (notably speed and defensive IMO) than Callum's opposition to date, though Smith has a powerful, grinding style that I can see overwhelming Groves eventually. It would be a very interesting matchup.

I think it would be on of those fights when you see the younger man lift their game significantly for a big fight (a bit like Groves - Froch 1 in some ways).

But this time I believe Smith would win, and take advantage of Groves's weakened confidence, his own size and strength, his lack of doubts... And that Smith will dominate for a later Ko

Grinding? His last wins have been 1st round stoppages over one guy who hadnt lost before and another who had never been stopped before. Don't get me wrong, I don't think Smith is some Julian Jackson style puncher but I think he's pretty heavy hitting and Groves has never had the best chin in the sport.

I think Smith could do with another 12 months or so before he's fully let off the leash. Right now I'd favour George in an up and down affair. Down the line a year or so Smith by mid rounds stoppage.

Let's get real....Smith has been the distance 5 times in 19 fights even without facing a top 15 guy, and his recent blowouts have been against guys who stood right in front of him, don't have Groves's speed, and don't move nearly as well as him. He obviously has power but I'm not convinced that he's going to be the same type of monster against better fighters.
