Sugar Ray Robinson vs. Red Garland?

Jazz piano player Red Garland (1923-1984), part of Miles Davis' first great quintet, was a former boxer who reportedly fought a young Sugar Ray Robinson. The bout is mentioned, but not substantiated, in various Garland biographies, but I have never been able to confirm that the fight ever happened, nor can I find Garland's professional record. Was this an amateur fight? Is the bout folklore? Did Garland fight under a different name? Any assistance would be appreciated. Thanks.
