Roy Jones Jr. Vs Floyd mayweather @154

Post by Vinsanity »

Roy's first 18 fights were very close to 154 so let's grab a time machine lol. Roy Jones Jr. At the beginning of his career vs a very seasoned Floyd let's say when he fought canelo? Who wins

Speed kills. The great Roy Jones, Jr had unbelievable speed at 154lbs. Pretty Boy Floyd, at that time of his career, was an established veteran and great boxer, but, the weight issue against one of the fastes boxers ever is a concern. Super Roy by KO in 8 or by UD.

Roy only has 1 fight on his record where he fought at the actual 154 pound limit. He fought under 160 a lot, but it was usually 155, 157, etc.

Even if they were both at 154 in this hypothetical matchup Roy would still have a significant size advantage, but he was green at this time in his career. Still with dazzling physical talents I'm sure, but this is already bona fide Hall of Famer Floyd we're talking about. He'd outbox Roy.

Floyd wins this. He's going to have far too much experience for a novice no matter how talented.

Would you guys favor the older, vastly experienced Heavyweight version of Archie Moore over young novice versions of Tyson or Foreman?

I'd edge Floyd to win this this in a defensive masterclass.

The weight is obviously an issue but stylistically I can't see the 154lb version of Mayweather beating Jones. Roy was ridiculously fast and just as hard to hit as Floyd. In my opinion Jones would beat him to the punch from the outside, I don't think he'd give Mayweather enough chances to counter and Floyd definitely doesn't have the power to trouble Jones. For all his critics about being overly defensive, Mayweather did at times walk his opponents down, did it at times against Canelo for example, but it's one thing to do that to a much slower, flat-footed opponent. If he tried it against Roy it wouldn't look dissimilar from the Toney fight imo, Jones beating him to the punch and moving off to the side. My prediction would be Jones UD, but I could see a stoppage if Mayweather turned to follow Jones and walked into Roy's best punch, his left hook.

Jones Jr, Hearns and Ray Leonard are about the only boxers, past or present, that I see beating Floyd at light middle. Floyd too slick and too good defensively to be beaten by anyone else.

RJJ absolutely destroys, Mayweather at this weight past his peak and at light middle no contest RJJ with a shoeshine combination stoppage.

If roy retired after the first tarver fight everyone would say he is the greatest, him continuing to fight tainted his legacy a bit

I wouldn't have said he was the greatest after the first Tarver fight. He would certainly be ranked higher than he is, but he wouldn't be the greatest there ever was.

Wasn't his fight with Ruiz after the first Tarver bout? He could have added that with no harm done.

Mayweather at the end of his career or Jones at the start?

Jones hydrates to 175 and wins a wide points decision.

Jones hit so hard, was incredibly fast with his hands and feet Floyd has better fundamentals but Roy is a much better athlete imagine if Roy was taught to box like mayweather when he was young Jesus Christ
