AJ-Martin SKY behind the ropes piece. Strange things are afoot

Post by reggaereggae »

So I watched (whilst fishing) the 'Behind the Ropes' PR Sky AJ blow job, sorry I mean vignette on a #StayHumble future people's champ, on the upcoming fight.

You can see it here: http://www.skysports.com/joshua/news/33680/10231491/1

So... These are my 'take aways' from this Sky / Hearn / AJ circle wank....

1. The humbleness situation: Lord, enough with the 'humble AJ' stuff already.... It's like flogging a whole field of dead horses. Do Hearn etc really think we're going to continually swallow this, especially considering the drug dealing, ABH, and PED suspicions? Even the title talks about how 'humble' AJ is. Me thinks he doth protest too much.... And I have read in 3 mainstream papers how Joshua is 'the guy every mother dreams of her daughter bringing home.'....  Yup, I bet they're thousands of Home Counties middle class mothers, can't sleep at night, just hoping "I wish my young, pretty, educated daughter would bring back an ex drug dealer, former Watford violent gangster, 18 1/2 stone black heavyweight boxer, steroid abuser and introduce him as my future son-in-law!"

The 'humble' stuff was the poorly-camouflaged theme of the night. It was a theme repeated like verbal diarrhoea eminating from a teenager with Tourette's who can't stop yelling 'FVCK OFF' repetitively...

Yeah, AJ is real... He talks to normal people (in our media set up in the post office) and is sooooo humble he doesn't want to buy a huge country house, but would rather stay on London (like most people his age....)

What a humble hero...

2. The Eddie situation: It was risible to watch Camp Fast Eddie act like some wide eyed groupie, mixed in with his 'cool dad' approach (whilst keeping AJ humble of course).... saying something similar to: 'yeah I saw AJ on his Instagram (I'm down with the kids, I know about social media innit)... He posted a photo of himself with 2 girls in a nightclub, so I texted him 'go home early!' And AJ text me back a photo of him at home relaxing!' (AJ is so humble and real... )
Eddie loves to hang wit da yout, like that awkward post Whyte vid of him hanging out in the dressing room with Stormzy and AJ chatting their fake bad boy routine, whilst an awkward Eddie tries to add a couple of comments (like the class plum trying to ingratiate himself with the cool kids....)

3. The Stormzy situation: this is very odd, and very suspicious. The Whyte 'rap' was embarrassing enough, but listening to Stormzy recording his pathetic AJ love grime rap was very bizarre.... Like the sort of thing a teenager would write about his 'idol'.... "What you think you can challenge AJ!!!?"... Etc

I believe that Stormzy and Joshua are having an undercover affair... Out of the blue they seem very close... Anthony has even laughably started to drop in the fake South London patois Spunkzy loves.

Have you ever heard about Joshua's girlfriend? Have you ever seen his girl at ringside? No.... But Stormzy's there every time, and in the dressing room.... Looking forward to milking AJ's seminal fluid...

Those are my thoughts - what do others think?

I think you're beating one off right now at the thought of Stormzy and AJ going at it like an MC on Meth.

He's admitted it himself... Apparently he was a bad man on the 'mean streets of Watford'... One of the safest areas in Britain. And he pulled himself up from the 'gangsta life' of Watford (read getting nicked for serving up in a middle class town) and got looked after by the ABA pressuring the court to let the crime lay low.

Hence the new 'stay humble' nonsense...

I like Anthony Joshua, but am really finding it hard to disagree with anything you've wrote.

I think there's AJ the sportsman (which I like), and AJ the brand (which I guess I like a little bit less). I definitely like the dedication and the determination in his training etc. His ambition and will to win are all admirable qualities as a sportsman, and then throw in there the perfect system he has in place, which has been there since the start of his pro career, he should be expected to make quick progress and do well.

The AJ brand is a bit tiresome. Although I believe he may well be humble, and not take for granted what he has, we don't need it rammed down our throats. The shameless flaunting of his brand is also a bit sad. He is making a lot of money even at the early stage of his career, he doesn't need to be flaunting his merchandise stall outside the O2 arena. The fakeness, something Whyte has already alluded to, is also something I can kind of see. Of course I don't know the guy personally, but it seems like the media face, and the behind the scenes videos don't exactly line up so well. I guess the boxing industry needs him to be something very specific, which is maybe not what he is, which can make him look fake. At the start of his pro career he was quite quiet and business like. As the fights move on, he's getting louder and louder. We'll see how his brand is in 12-18 months.

I'm going to continue to support AJ the sportsman. I'm sure if we met many of our idols face to face, we probably wouldn't like them very much, but boxing puts the sports person in the limelight a lot more it seems.

Joshua sold a bit of weed big deal

When Martin was talking about his rough childhood I thought joshua was going to start crying

Joshua seems the compassionate sort , if he saw a disabled person being bullied I reckon he would stick up for them ,

Joshua was just a bit of a prat when he was younger not a vicious type

The only possible scenario I can imagine in which on a public forum FW can barely be alluded to yet AJ can be brutally defamed is that RR the OP is FW

Agree with almost all bar the Stormzy affair.

The clean cut image is pretty dull to be honest which doesn't usually bother me, but i think its because he's trying so hard for the clean cut image.

As Scuba Claude would say: 'Its like the Hippo".

No doubt, he brings fireworks though!! Even if he loses he can come back and be in some pretty entertaining bouts.

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I hope I mixed humour with genuine thoughts!

It's funny after Joshua won the Olympics (even though I really thought he maybe lost 2 fights), I thought he was the best prospect in the world. Especially after a few pro fights. I remember saying to my friend (a casual) that if I could buy stock in a fighter, it would be him.

But, whilst I think he has tremendous potential, I just can't stand the Press release / Hearn / Sky PPV / smoke and mirrors propaganda. Unfortunately I think it does work on the casual fan.... If all I read were mainstream papers (press releases) and watched some highlights I'd be fully on the train....

But to real fans, I find it insulting, disrespectful, not to mention thieving bull sh1t. To the extent that I actually want AJ to get chinned by Prince Charles.... I don't care if he's British, boxing is an individual sport so you can warm to person itself or the opposite. I just can't stand the blatant rip off, hype, PR massages, and North Korean style propaganda machine.... I don't like being treated like a fool...

I know boxing is a business, but as we grow older and get more nous and more cynical, these antics become distasteful.

Maybe I'm just becoming a bitter old man!!

I know what you mean. It's the nauseating fable of the champagne socialist. No journalist writing that seriously wants their daughter to bring home a giant, semi-literate, drug dealing black man from the gutter. Your daughter, sure. They'd celebrate that delightful example of progressive British rainbow diversity. But they sure as hell don't want their daughter getting knobbed by an AJ or a Dillian Whyte.

Every time the smiling Joshua uses the word "humble" some primeval intuition inside me substitutes it for "psycho".

He's like Uriah Heep on steroids. I'm convinced a sociopathic explosion is looming.
