20-a-day and an all time great. Great dedication and an inspiration to achieve what he did whilst smoking. This is why I can never give up.

Monzon apparently smoked two packs of Malboro Red a day, but we'll never know for sure.

I don't buy it , in training camp they all quit , they probably let loose after a fight in night clubs but even then l bet they weren't chronic smokers

Nigel is just talking utter rubbish , it's pathetic

Coventry legend Steve Ogrizovic was offered an extension to his contract and one of the stipulations was he gave up smoking. He was about 40 years old at this time.

Wasn't Socrates a heavy smoker as well?

Socrates was a heavy smoker, as was Cryuff.

Ginola, Bartez, Vialli all smokers, there's loads of top flight footballers that have smoked. Not sure all of them are 20 a day but...

My dad said Freddie Truman used to smoke in his playing years but cricket was a bit different then.

If Benn says he smoked, he probably did. It's not much to lie about.

I think Mayorga was more a publicity thing, they used to take pics of him with a beer in one hand and a cig in the other.

My granddad smoked from the age of 7 and was a heavy chain smoker, used to chug at least two packs a day when he was old.

Stuarty30 wrote:Ricardo Mayorga is a mad chain smoker. A lot of footballers have been collared at it too which surprises me.
I suspect Mayorga picked up that habit on the street at a young age. Must be very hard to pack in fags if you start in single digit numbers. I know as my uncle started at about 7 or 8.
Also I wonder if these smoker/ athlete’s bodies are less affected in training as they have just gotten used to it? :-?

Personally I take this claim with a huge pinch of salt. No way would Benn have been the same fighter. He was explosive and very ambitious and monsterously strong. I don’t think he’d have been willing to concede any edge for a smoker’s lifestyle. No way. Then there’s the weight....which would have been harder to achieve I reckon.

What he probably means is he smoked in spells....sometimes a good few, sometimes none.
