I know what you mean. It's the nauseating fable of the champagne socialist. No journalist writing that seriously wants their daughter to bring home a giant, semi-literate, drug dealing black man from the gutter. Your daughter, sure. They'd celebrate that delightful example of progressive British rainbow diversity. But they sure as hell don't want their daughter getting knobbed by an AJ or a Dillian Whyte.

Every time the smiling Joshua uses the word "humble" some primeval intuition inside me substitutes it for "psycho".

He's like Uriah Heep on steroids. I'm convinced a sociopathic explosion is looming.

its surely a contradiction in terms for anyone to preach their humility, over, and over, and over again....

Thanks everyone for the feedback. I hope I mixed humour with genuine thoughts!

It's funny after Joshua won the Olympics (even though I really thought he maybe lost 2 fights), I thought he was the best prospect in the world. Especially after a few pro fights. I remember saying to my friend (a casual) that if I could buy stock in a fighter, it would be him.

But, whilst I think he has tremendous potential, I just can't stand the Press release / Hearn / Sky PPV / smoke and mirrors propaganda. Unfortunately I think it does work on the casual fan.... If all I read were mainstream papers (press releases) and watched some highlights I'd be fully on the train....

But to real fans, I find it insulting, disrespectful, not to mention thieving bull sh1t. To the extent that I actually want AJ to get chinned by Prince Charles.... I don't care if he's British, boxing is an individual sport so you can warm to person itself or the opposite. I just can't stand the blatant rip off, hype, PR massages, and North Korean style propaganda machine.... I don't like being treated like a fool...

I know boxing is a business, but as we grow older and get more nous and more cynical, these antics become distasteful.

Maybe I'm just becoming a bitter old man!!
Yeah I used to be a fan, even now I think he's a good prospect, but the insane hype and bullplop has really soured me. I consider myself a casual TBH, I've not been into boxing enough for long enough to call myself anything else, but I'm amazed how people swallow it up and say he'd beat everyone in the division (but Haye and Mike Tyson would maybe give a slight challenge ).

Two of the worst behind the ropes since the terrible degale groves one years ago. I still hear Ed Drapers "it's Harrrrrrlesden versus Hammersmith" ringing in my ears.

Martin's was filled with out of date almost corny hip hop (MOP cold as Ice as he was taking an Ice bath anyone?) and Reggaereggae you are spot on with the AJ one. The laundrette scene? The post office? Scraping the barrel much?

Two novices battling it out for a paper title. The hype has run away with it on this one.

Not really, of course I will watch it, but lets see it for what it is. Charles Martin isn't a top 10 heavyweight just because he holds a title. They are both relative novices, that turned to boxing later in life. It just happens that Joshua is better in every department than the 'champ'. Got to call it as you see it. As a card, there are some decent matches like Selby Hunter that I'm more interested in.

I find any kind of marketing hugely irritating but why shouldn't Team AJ come up with the best angle they can to make the most money they can while they can.

Is he humble ? Probably not but humility is a characteristic not often found in highly successful, young, millionaire sportsmen.

Is he the vicious criminal tw@t alluded to by some on here. Probably not. Unless someone has access to the relevant court transcripts we're all just guessing.

Hearn comes across as a bit of a knob but it helps the wheels of his promotional nonsense run more smoothly if he ingratiates himself with everyone, Stormzy included.

Are Stormsy and AJ mates ? Probably not but in this age of social media drivel cross promotion is everywhere.

I liked the bit where AJ had been asked if he realised how popular he is and he said something like, no, I just go to the gym and focus on my training and keeping winning, that's what's important, not being popular. About 3 minutes earlier Hearn was lauding him for learning Spanish at night school so he can 'reach out to the Hispanic market in the US'.

some cracking posts in here lads, I was thinking about what would be said on here when I watched the programme, I underestimated your wit and humour!

However, seriously? Seems a nice kid, makes good tv, is a good boxer, does it really matter what they say or how they portray him?
I just watch and take it with a pinch of salt, you tend to enjoy things more that way!

Everyone has their dark side, Hatton and Calzaghe for starters who were portrayed as butter wont melt types....its not new chaps....breathe in, breathe out......keep calm and enjoy the fight! :TU:

That there is I tell you, comic genius...  I am still laughing about it the day after I read it!

From Google: Uriah Heep is a fictional character created by Charles Dickens in his novel David Copperfield. The character is notable for his cloying humility, obsequiousness, and insincerity, making frequent references to his own "'humbleness".

Yes...Yes, you can just imagine the scene:

Quentin, the CEO of multi million pound Media Consultancy Hodges Bartolomew & Patel, put down his copy of the Guardian, his brow creased with concern at the ongoing Syrian refugee crisis. He agreed with the lead article that me must accept more refugees in the UK, anyone against the idea was clearly a racist...

Quentin had himself thought about inviting a couple of Syrian families to stay with him in his 10 bedroom, 100 acre property in the picture perfect Berkshire village of Cookham Dean, but he felt that this location would not fit in with their cultural needs. Manchester, Croydon or Birmingham would suit the families better, with the plentiful mosques and Kebab shops...

***Ding Dong***

Quentin opened the door to find his petite blonde only daughter, India, next to an enormous 18 stone, 6ft 6 black man with such large muscles, they were seemingly trying to escape by bursting out of the man's FUBU t shirt.

"Dad?" Said India. "I'd like you to meet my new boyfriend."

"I'm sorry Darling," replied Quentin. "I can't see him.... There's a huge black man in the way...."

"Daddy, don't be silly, this is Anthony and if it's ok, he will be staying tonight..." India recognised the perplexed look in her dad's face, so reassured him. "You know how we read about that perfect man any mother would like her daughter to bring back. Well here he is!!" She breathed excitedly.

"Yes, but that was in your mother's Daily Mail which is racist, homophobic, and should never, ever be believed as its trying to destroy community cohesion and it's.."

"Shush papa, we actually read it in the Observer, and the same quote appeared in all the papers. Exactly the same quote, predictably ..." India worked in PR and knew a rehashed Eddie Hearn press release when she saw one.

Quentin was rather surprised at this choice of boyfriend... He had never met a black person before, let alone this large and didn't know what to think. But then he remembered a Guardian article he had read by Yasmin Alibhai Brown about how white men, including beta-male repressed metrosexuals, need to be aware of their conditioned prejudices, even if they are sub conscious, and should by law be restrained from making any value judgment on a person of colour.

"Hi. I'm Anthony Joshua.' Said the huge man in a deep but surprisingly soft, friendly and down-to-earth manner. "Most people call me AJ, but you can call me 'Femi' as that's what all my family call me...........innit."

Looking up at this behemoth of a figure extending an opened hand the size of the large Royal Worcester serving tray he had recently bought his wife, Quentin couldn't help but notice, how respectful and modest this young man was... One word kept running through his mind..."Humble"..... He just couldn't believe, despite his size, how humble this man was...

"Well I suppose you had better come in. Do you take sugar in your tea Joshua?"

"Please sir you can call me Femi" the young man replied humbly, "and no sugar, thanks. I never put anything artificial in my body. I'm just an ordinary down-to-earth stay at home kind of guy. Did you know butter doesn't actually melt in my mouth?" He continued, with a huge but oddly humble sh1t-eating grin pulled a cross his face.

To be continued.....

I remember when Larry Holmes spoke about Mike Tyson he would say things like he would self-destruct etc. Tyson was so closely managed with Jim Jacobs that he had this fantastic image. He was the ultimate bad boy who had done good, ferocious in the ring, but (in the main) he was Mr charming with his squeeky lispy voice out of it.

This was before all the Robin Givens business where the mask started to fall. All we heard was the 4 am training runs, no trouble with the law and was the dictionary definition of how he turned his life around.

Larry Holmes though saw through the mask and made some bold claims, most of which wound up being true.

Occasionally, Tyson would let his mask slip during his early reign with comments such as his "nose quote", but until Jacobs' death was a PR dream.

I do see parallels with Joshua and Tyson, occasionally Joshua will let his mask slip - such as his comments on whether he respects Whyte - Brand Joshua said only 2 minutes before "respect to Whyte, he brought it too me" - then though he has asked about Whyte and does he now respect him - he just said "No" and even Ed Robinson was a bit taken aback by the response.

He's going to beat Martin and he will have a nice career, but I do think of what Larry Holmes said about Tyson when I think of Joshua. For me, the way he fights is a bit of a "bully" him in - when things don't quite go his own way he resorts to dirty tactics - and I wonder what will happen when things don't quite go according to plan.
