After 30 years, I cannot watch this sport anymore

Post by tobyh5 »

I cancelled Sky over a year ago and do not miss it. I cancelled it as it is a joke, an utter joke. I do not regret it. Eddie Hearn has ruined, literally ruined British Boxing, IMO.

I had a sales call from Sky Sports last week, a "how can we tempt you back?" call. I gave it both barrels about boxing. Told the guy that I will take Sky again the day they stop selling turds as fights, dressing up bullshit, when they stop having an exclusive contract with con job Hearn, when they start being honest with their commentary, put on proper fights etc. Fair to say the guy was not expecting it.

I am sick, totally pig fecking sick of this crap now. I have been watching boxing, buying magazines since 1984, when I was 10, I used to video every single fight and keep a catalogue of all my tapes etc and now, now I can not even watch this farcial situation any more. I hate that I was with my dad on Saturday in London. I do not see him often as he lives in Spain. He likes his boxing. He asks me about AJ and asks if AJ was going to win the title against this tough unbeaten champ. He only watches Sky, so he has fallen for the hype BS machine. I hate having to explain what a joke it is, that it will be over in one or two rounds, that Martin is one of the worse champions in history, have to explain how he got a title.

Then AJ wins, and I cannot even bring myself to watch IFL TV. I know what Hearn will say, "Josh just beat an unbeaten champion. No one will stand up to his power, this was a credible, unbeaten World champion he beat. Martin had never been down, never even hurt before and Josh just walked through him...."

Then I read the report in The RIng, which is a total fluff piece. I read two or three paragraphs then no more. Any article that starts off "To paraphrase hip-hop duo Cannibal Ox, tonight was the night when we’d learn, once and for all, whether Anthony Joshua was the real McCoy or a wind-up toy." has no merit at all. The Ring should be embarrassed to have allowed this on their website. Where is their integrity?

That's it, after a lifetime loving this sport, right now I can watch no more.

I'll also be cancelling Sky Sports next month and don't think I'll ever bother resubscribing, will just get a Now TV day pass in the unlikely event that they schedule a non-PPV competitive show. B0xnati0n is definitely staying on my subscriptions though, absolutely superb value.

More generally, whilst I agree that a lot that surrounds boxing is bollocks, it doesn't distract me from enjoying the sport itself. Just ignore the hype, ignore 'world titles', ignore the sanctioning bodies and just take the fights for what they are.

Sky Sports is dead anyway, it's lost the champions league, a huge chunk of the premier league, there's only so many times you can fill all the gaps in the channels with "Dwight Yorkes Greatest Goals" and Sporting Greats programs. Come to think of it the only thing I watch on Sky Sports are the rare bit of non-PPV boxing, Liverpool(when they're on, which isn't often these days) and Speedway.

The expression 'under sell and over supply' is lost when it comes to boxing.

Sometimes it's down to the boxers - Quigg v Frampton for example - but most times down to the mechanics of the business, the promoters and the gullibility of the majority, who last night wouldn't have been diehard boxing fans.

At the bottom end, a local lad who turned over a year ago is getting good press coverage and will earn a crust but most people who ask me for an opinion are horrified to hear that as a ticket seller he'll not be challenged by anything like a respectable opponent. It's a business, first, second and last......

You must've been asleep when all of those IBO, WBU & WBF bouts were being passed off as legitimate title fights. When the number of intercontinental/international/alphabet titles available meant that obvious match ups never materialised.

Personally I would rather a boxing world where there might be a few British fighters who do not deserve to be labelled 'world champion', rather then what went before, where the likes of Richard Williams and Ryan Rhodes were mismanaged and let down by questionable promotional decisions and where Jamie Moore was denied a deserved chance at a world title.

In short if you think it's bad now, you've got a very, very short memory.

I am not interested in boxing anymore, it is a bullshit exercise in business, they should get Eddie Hearn to replace Alan Sugar on 'The Apprentice' when he has to step down.

You can't take this personally either, none of it has any gravitas - as long as you have four fornicating belts floating around, then you will never have 'world championship boxing' in its truest sense. So why bother with it? I didn't even know AJ was boxing last night, who cares? :maybe:

Actually now that I think about it, I totally agree with everybody else. Ricky's WBU reign was epic. And as for hype, Barry McGuigan declaring Carl Froch the best super middleweight in the world, (on ITV no less), after he vanquished Albert Rybacki was definitely spot on.

Don't even get me started on all those British boxing greats who won legitimate WBU & WBF titles. I'm welling up just thinking about it.

Ah yeah Minter. You are about my age so the same era. I was staying in a hotel in Spain with my parents when I was 6, so when Minter was World Champion. He was at the same hotel, I had no idea who he was but my dad sent me to his dinner table one night to ask for his autograph.

Big time boxing has in recent years mutated into a spectacle for the casual, celeb-gawking sports mob. It is clearly, empirically at its worst ever, at all levels, in terms of deserving world champions and quality challengers.

I've made several histrionic statements about retiring from boxing but I always come crawling back like the abused wife I am. I am glad I have a lot of interests beyond this fallen sport however.

Yup, boxing is a strange, frustrating addiction that makes little sense to the non fan. A bit like crack cocaine; and with PPV prices almost as expensive
Unfortunately, unlike you, I have few interests outside boxing, apart from whacking off over porno vids of amateur blondes giving stranger blow jobs.....

I felt like that about 3-4 years ago and stopped watching, reading of buying boxing mags. Then I gradually got back into it. Now I just try and avoid taking any interest in the alphabet belts or politics but it is hard as it is so frustrating.

I cancelled sky sports about 6 months ago though and haven't missed it one bit. I think the only semi decent non PPV show they've had on was Calum smith last week in that full period.

Sky are a disgrace it is a total propaganda machine delivered for the consumption of those who only take an interest in the sport in the lead up to a big fight.

Not only hating on rich daddy's-boys but also clearly racists for non-White and gypsies ....

Nah, only joking I think the same.

I cancelled Sky Sports a few years ago and don't watch much boxing these days.

I am trying to be more "glass half full" in life generally and don't really post on the forums much these days as I noticed that about 90% of my comments were negative which can't be good

Certainly not the main point of your post, but pleasantly surprised to see Cannibal Ox paraphrased in a boxing write up!

The only sport I watch apart from boxing is the golf majors.
As soon as they have finished unless the boxing content has improved I might cancel aswell.

Don't think I can get sports in HD on virgin.

I don't think the sport is radically different than it ever was. Perhaps because you're a bit older now you can see through the hype. I just laugh at it, but there's no doubt we've seen it all before with the WBU, Audley's BBC contract etc.
What you have to remember is that professional boxing is a business & the sport only exists to make money.
Sometimes we get bills with mismatches masquerading as 50/50 contests but the reason I keep going is that every so often we get to see great fights in spite of the hype, bullshit and politics.
Boxers are special athletes and give us the kind of drama and excitement we just can't get from any other sports.

I'm about the other way around, for 15 year it couldn't bother me, but now there comes a new generation of heavyweights I'm interested again.
One expects him to win, the other expects him to win, just yesterday there were a lot of guys that said that they tought Martin had a fair chance and such. I expect Joshua to fight the winner of Parker/Takam, the winner of Browne/Chagaev for that belt and after that Tyson Fury. That's a hard to predict fight in my opinion.
