Conor Benn Debut
Conor Benn Debut
How did every one rate Benn's debut, I thought he did alright, he was facing a dud in all honesty and do what any self respecting pro would do and take the guy out.
It did strike me that there was very little use of the jab, in the limited amount we saw, he is young, but then again that should be a fundamental part of any boxers asset from the get go.
What impressed me was the way he rolls into his punches, he moves into range with real intent, which more often than not will back people up, but leaves him open to shots on the way in, and if a Euro bum can tag him often then the decent opposition out there might be quite tough for him

Re: Conor Benn Debut
I thought he looked good. Not perfect - but it's his first pro fight in front of a big crowd, so mentally it must affect the performance.
Yes, he got caught a few time but it was minor. First pro fight. I think he'll go far, he was very fast and sharp

Re: Conor Benn Debut
I’d not heard of him 18 months ago. I don’t like the hype train that it seems he is going to be on board from the get go. Has he done much in the ams?
So far I’ve seen one piece on him (more on his Dad tbh) and some video on social media where he relates a story about how his mates nicknamed him “the dentist” after a fight he had (that we don’t know how started, or if the opponent could defend himself)
Not interested.....doesn’t say much about what the tele think about the average boxing fan’s mentality.

28 Amatuer fights in sheds in Australia but I don't know his record, I agree with the hype point, being set up for a big and hard fallmagwitch wrote:I’d not heard of him 18 months ago. I don’t like the hype train that it seems he is going to be on board from the get go. Has he done much in the ams?

I still can't make up my mind if I was impressed or not. Can't really take anything from it, he was getting hit but I put that down to him not having the respect for the man in front of him. Moved around his opponent lovely to land body shots and looks to have a bit of pop in his punches. See how he goes but with what I saw last night I don't think he should be rushed, times on his hands

Re: Conor Benn Debut
Pro too soon for me, maybe he should of tried for a go in the ABA's and built up some experience there.
As for last night, there was things I liked but his defence seemed wide open as he came in, but its his debut so over excitement comes into it.
I hope he learns to box a bit more, as its unlikely he's inherited the same power as his dad, but not many men have that sort of power anyway.

Re: Conor Benn Debut
Seen a dressing room clip on IFL, Eddie said he'll be out 6 times before the end of the year.
Needs to be in with lads who can give him rounds but don't carry much of a dig, we'll be able to see what he's about when he's had a dozen fights, back end of 2017.

Re: Conor Benn Debut
Can't complain with that being his first fight especially in front of nearly 20k people in fact I think he done really well and lets face it he is with a decent team as well so he will get the best form of training nutritionist and all the bits that goes with the elite Matchroom boxers.
I also was impress with the love his dad showed him after the fight...complete different contrast to the Eubanks.

Re: Conor Benn Debut
He's said he wants to fight every month. I just hope if it is a case he is on every show they don't go putting pressure on him by televising every fight. He isn't an Olympic medalist so should theoretically be bought on at a steadier pace and not go for British title within 12 fights speed. If he goes bowling the journeymen over then fair enough but I'm not so sure he will.
Re: Conor Benn Debut
I think if his Dad had landed some of those shots flush at any stage of his career the opponent would have went to sleep.
Re: Conor Benn Debut
Remember watching Nige absolutely brutalise a beneluxer called Rob Niewhuizen (sp) in one of his first few fights. Think it was Reg Gutteridge who described Rob as a walking hat stand. Benn was just fierce, bristling with violent power.johnswan1 wrote:I think if his Dad had landed some of those shots flush at any stage of his career the opponent would have went to sleep.

He's only 19 and there's a lot expected of him. Considering it was his debut and it was on a PPV event at a large venue he done good.

Re: Conor Benn Debut
not really anything to go by as yet tell you the truth.
did leave himself open at times though for a counter which a more skilled opponent could expose, beat who was in front of him at the end of the day didn't he

Re: Conor Benn Debut
Didn't learn a thing. Tomato can was successfully opened, beginning of the hype has started, expect Hearn to be putting him on plenty of these casual-friendly shows and they can build him up. Did what was expected of him but can't say anything really about it.
Re: Conor Benn Debut
being brought along perfectly ,, few ameteur fights in a place where boxing is traditionaly weak ,, don't go to far in the ameteurs because he'll get beat by the top ameteurs , hence losing the mystique , turn pro in England on the back of his fathers name ,,,,, given European bin men to Ko and get the casual fans talking about how he can KO Joshua and Eubank jnr on the same night ... Grab a 20-0 record all along calling out Eubank and his Dad talking about a Benn Eubank snr fight on the same card ,
When they relize the public has had enough , try to organize the worlds first tag team boxing match at wembley , announce to the world its going to happen but only after the next 3 ppv fights so if you want to see it , roll up and buy now , then announce its changed to a 6 person tag team match cos there mams want a go has well ,, then say sorry its not happenning the women don't want to break there nails .
Get ready to follow , be frustrated , be annoyed , be angry ,, and finally go Yaaaawn,, not interested anymore .

Re: Conor Benn Debut
I didn't watch but I'm already soured on him due to him ducking his original opponent.
OK I can get the reasonings behind it, but be up front and just say "He's too good for this stage of my career". Don't try to feed us bs about injuries and then arrange to fight a bum the next day.

Re: Conor Benn Debut
Easy opponent, but fair enough, he has time to work his way up and get better, I don't think we have much to go on yet.
Re: Conor Benn Debut
Good tempo to his work and digs the body shots in like his dad and Hatton. Whether he hit the heights that they two did is a different story. Doesn't look a monsterous puncher but he's only 19 and his strength will develope in the next couple of years.

Looked ok, against limited opposition. Can't say much right now, seems aggressive and pretty quick. Doesn't look as much of a specimen as the old man, but that's often misleading, Calzaghe never looked much of a specimen.
Re: Conor Benn Debut
Must be hard doing this with a dad like Benn, he'll never be as good. How could he be? But we won't know anything about him for a couple do years yet.jamesmcdonnell wrote:Looked ok, against limited opposition. Can't say much right now, seems aggressive and pretty quick. Re: Conor Benn Debut
with very limited amateur experience, he's unlikely to be anywhere near as good, Benn boxed extensively in the Army, which must have been a pretty gruelling experience.SNG wrote:Must be hard doing this with a dad like Benn, he'll never be as good. Good luck to the lad, he's carrying a lot of weight on his shoulders. That's a heavy family name to bear.
Re: Conor Benn Debut
It could only be bigger if he was a middleweight. I'm surprised they aren't already talking about Jr.jamesmcdonnell wrote:with very limited amateur experience, he's unlikely to be anywhere near as good, Benn boxed extensively in the Army, which must have been a pretty gruelling experience.SNG wrote:Must be hard doing this with a dad like Benn, he'll never be as good. Re: Conor Benn Debut
Eubank Jr looks a lot bigger than Benn Jr to me, I think it's unlikely they will ever fight. By the time Conor has enough experience, I reckon Eubank will be at 168, and Conor doesn't look like he'll even be a big welter, he came in 10 stone 4, and didn't look ripped at that weight. So he's probably going to end up at Jr middle in a few years.SNG wrote:It could only be bigger if he was a middleweight. Re: Conor Benn Debut
Hopefully Matchroom are realistic with potential he can reach.
He has got a severe lack of quality amateur experience and looks very raw.
He needs a good 3-4 years of careful matchmaking before he even thinks about British level.
Doesn't he sound like his dad aswell when he speaks. Loved the Big Ben chimes aswell. He seems a nice kid really hope he doesn't get swallowed up in the hype.
