Boxing's most bizarre finishes...

Post by TheGoods »

Watching Gomez the other week got me thinking about some of the weirder endings to fights down the years.

Duran - Leonard II and Lewis - McCall II are a couple of memorable ones. Can you think of anymore?
I remember reading that Aaron Pryor just put his gloves down and repeatedly started doing the sign of the cross before being stopped in his only loss (He was a fully fledged crack head at the time). Williams - Potter maybe but that was more heroic than bizarre.

What say you?

The one that always does the rounds is the one with the guy who runs about and jumps up and sits on the ropes at the end of the round - but doesn't time it right and his opponent smashes a haymaker on him and he falls out the ring.

We can probably add in Gomez's last fight too now.

And someone brought this up on the current scene

Not quite a finish but when Steve McCarthy knocks the bloke out (or just giving him a pasting) and the blokes Mum jumps in the ring and start wacking Steve with her handbag always makes me chuckle!

Was the fight stopped due to McCarthy sustaining a cut in the attack?

Tony Wilson v Steve McCarthy, During the 3rd round McCarthy had Wilson on the verge of a stoppage, when Wilsons Mum ran into the ring and started trying to hit McCarthy with her shoe , when the ref jumped in McCarthy thought he had won and started to celebrate.
Once order was resumed the ref said that the fight should carry on, McCarthy refused so the fight was awarded to Wilson by 3rd round TKO.
Strange but true.

The one where ex world champ Simon Brown gets knocked out: he hits the canvas out cold, but continues to thow punches while lying on his back with his eyes closed.

wasn't that against Vincent Pettway?

Sugar Ray Robinson hit Rocky Graziano so hard with a right hand in, I think, the 3rd round of their meeting, that Rocky hit the deck with his leg doing involuntary cycling motions...very weird.

I dunno about bizarre but sad, was watching a really out of shape Roberto Duran say 'No Mas' once again against limited club fighter Pat Lawlor. He claimed an injured arm but I think he just wasnt happy in there..

Incidentally, the fight before Lawlor had beaten a washed up Wilfred Benitez on pts!! What a pair of scalps for a club fighter!

Yep that's the one, like Steve says it's a scary scene and good to hear he's ok these days ( I think )

Plus that cruiserweight title fight from the late 80's early 90's (?) a double knockdown and the boxer who staggers to his feet just in time wins by KO.

Barry McGuigen KO's Clyde Ruan in the last few seconds of the fight. The bell rings to save Ruan getting counted out - so under Brit rules he escapes a knockout, and loses on points - though he's unconcious at the time so doesn't know too much about it!

Glenn Catley stoppage vs Andreas Galfi was a bit frightening, he was out on his feet and laughing - not ala Alex Arthur vs Gomez - he was just completely out of it - but thats how he reacted, tottering around and laughing.

Tervor Berbick vs John Tate was had a bizzare ending. Just before the start of the 9th, Tate looks knackered, Berbick is looking like a mad man rareing to go.

The rounds starts and Berbick is literally running and throwing punches, Tate is running away and a couple of back of the head shot, he stumbles and is out. Think it had to be fatigue more than anything. Berbick was like an animal.

I remember one from quite a few years ago. I think it was on Eurosport where the bloke gets knocked down and goes over on his ankle. When he goes to get up he realises that he foot is facing the wrong way :o

I remember a bizzare finish from Eurosport, I think it was an American fighter - basically, both guys sort of stumbled and were on the floor - one guy got up and offered to help the other guy up. Somehow (whether purposely or not) the guy who was offering to help the other guy, sort of turned it and dumped the other guy back on his arse.

Whether it was purposeful or not, it was good natured - both were smiling about it. Untill the ref threw the guy out for foul play. I think it was kind of like the Hamed flip vs Soto - but much more good natured.

Not a finish as such but i remember the end of Witter-Ndou, Witter winds up a massive hook and Ndou ducks leaving Witter on his arse! Witter gets off the floor with an extravagent backflip. Oscar De La Hoya seemed to enjoy it judging by his big smile at ringside.

I was at that fight. It was truly bizarre, Steve had Wilson against the ropes, pummelling seven bells out of him and the next thing we know an old lady has wandered into the ring and had clobbered Steve. McCarthy thought it was the ref stopping the fight (it was on the verge) and started celebrating, whilst pandemonium broke out amongst the crowd.

Of course, once McCarthy had been told by the ref what had happened, and the fight had to continue, he wasn't too happy, especially because he'd now got a decent sized cut on his head thanks to contact with shoe, so he refused to continue. Ref awarded the fight to Wilson, who beat a hasty retreat back to the dressing room through a rather irate crowd (including me, as I remember getting carried away and standing on my seat shouting all sorts of insults).

Steve's brother Paul had to come out and help calm things down. Weird night.

Couple of others , Mills Lane managed to push Hopkins over on his ankle and the fight couldn't continue, i think it was against Carl Allen, Hopkins was awarded a technical decision.

Also didn't a Cruiserweight title fight end when one of the boxres stood up in his corner and cut his eye on the TV Camera, he was stopped because of it, think that went to the scorecards as well.

And possibly the weirdest i've ever seen , and the fight didb't finish, but continued after ,has to be the Parachutist that fell into the ring during Bowe v Holyfield II.

Yeah Bernard Hopkins V Robert Allen 1, i was going to mention that one. Only seen it once briefly but it was a weird ending. How about Oleg Maskaev punching Hasim Rahman through the ring and disappearing underneath ringside! And as it all happens Steve Smoger gets clocked on the noggin with a flying chair.
