There's no greater win in the history of boxing than the Smokin' Joe victory over the great Muhammad Ali. That got to be tops for me.

OK, let's move on to Cruiserweight. Shouldn't take long, but shouldn't be ignored either. My nomination for best win. Evander Holyfield K0 4 Dwight Muhammad Qawi 1987.

Agreed.

Marvin said before the fight he'd break every bone in Tommy's body & he sure tried to as well.

He met fire with fire & pressured Hearns into streetfight.

Tremendous win.

At Cruiserweight. Virgil Hill's 1st round stoppage of Fabrice Tiozzo in 2000 has to be near the top.

Holyfield over Qawi 1 has to be the only answer there.

For entertainment value YES ! It may well have been the best CW fight ever, but a knockout of a guy never previously even close to being stopped, in the 4th rd for the title is a more impressive result.

You got a guy in his 11th fight, never been past 8 rounds, in a 15 round war against a beast. Not even in the same ballpark. Then he knocked him out in the rematch, never been stopped, in the 4th rd. That was more impressive too!

Heavyweight I'd edge Johnson over Jeffries with FOTC second.

Cruiser I'd go Holyfield Qawi.

You're missing the point. Let's say 2 guys meet to unify a world title, it ends up a split decision with both guys getting dropped and all 3 judges having the margin of victory being only 1 pt, thousands of fans come away saying it was the greatest fight they'd ever seen. 6 months later they have a rematch and one guy wins by stoppage in the 1st round. So what was the more impressive fight ? The first one of course. What was the more impressive result ? The second fight of course.

That doesn't meet this criteria at all. Evander was a clear winner as a pro novice against the top guy in the world. Fighting 3 more rounds than Hill ever fought in his life and almost double he ever had. That backdrop is ridiculous and pretty much unprecedented. Vote as you will, I don't even see it as debatable and I can't imagine anyone else will either.

Edit: Your analogy fits Castillo/Corrales and nobody cites the second fight as the most impressive.

Holyfield v Qawi I was pretty close, and that's part of why it was a great fight. -Putting Qawi down for the count in the 4th rd is more impressive.

It wasn't the same fighter, nor the same circumstances. Too each their own. I can't imagine why anyone would consider that a greater win.

Qawi had seen better days, and that was even the case coming into the 1st bout. Light Heavweight was his best weight. However, before the 2nd bout, he had dominated and stopped 26-1 Lee Roy Murphy in the 6th, and had gotten robbed against Ossie Ocasio, so he was certainly not a shot fighter.

Never said he was, Holyfield was much more seasoned and a prohibitive favorite. No need to go back and forth anymore, you're somehow locked in with this and nothing is going to change your mind. All good, just an astonishing opinion.

i think ali liston I needs to be mentioned. it
was seen as a light heavy getting slaughtered
yet it actually turned out to be the birthplace
of the most mythical figure in boxing history.

Max Schmeling v Joe Louis 1 was a tremendous victory, especially when you consider what Louis did to Schmeling in the rematch & the fact that Louis went on to become arguably the greatest HW of all time.

I think Louis v Schmeling II was a pretty good win but not a great one. The first time they fought it was an upset and Schmeling was now 2 years older while Louis was more seasoned. Thought about Clay v Liston I, but the ending was a bit anti climactic. Had Liston not quit after the 6th, I don't think it would have gone on that much longer, it was tee-off time and Sonny knew it.
