Re: OK I confess. I'm on the AJ train.
I remember the first time I saw the FOTC, knowing nothing of the needle and so on
When later I learned of the gorilla comments and so son, I don't recall thinking 'god if only I had known the backstory it may have enlivened the nondescript proceedings of the fight somewhat'

Re: OK I confess. I'm on the AJ train.
I do think sometimes the hype can help a fight, seeing two blokes get at each other at pressers can help sell a fight. Look at Hatton-Mayweather. Told all my mates Hatton had no chance...saw all the press, went to the stuff at Manchester town hall and come fight night I knew Hatton was going to win this fight and was dying to see it.Counter-puncher wrote:I remember the first time I saw the FOTC, knowing nothing of the needle and so on

Well done. You're so superior to all us folks who like a big of colour in our sport.... And yes WWE is over the top, and no one wants that, but boxing is real however, and risks injury. There is no harm in a bit of marketing.Counter-puncher wrote:I guess I'm lucky being able to enjoy fights at face value without a puerile need for wwf style backstories.
Would you like to watch pro boxing if a press conference ran like this:
"I really respect my opponent and hope I have the skills to win this bout"
And the challenger replies with:
"I really respect my opponent and hope I have the skills to win this bout"
And then they shook hands, did t engage in any eyeballing, and boxed with no fire in their belly....

You just described the buildup to Castillo-Corrales 1.

ok fair doos , you are right for once in your life about Fury being cocky ( you might find him handsome too ) , but to me Joshua doesn't come across like that .Horse wrote:Wrong as usual.rd350lc wrote:It's laughable that you call him cocky and you would never say the same about Fury .

It was only 3 or 4 fights ago Joshua was saying he wasn't ready for the top boys .

By now if you are not on AJ train, at least a bit, you need your head to be examined.

I don't mind AJ, but I'm on the fury train. I'd love to see fury box his head off, just to see the look on silver spoons faceTarkus wrote:By now if you are not on AJ train, at least a bit, you need your head to be examined.

I thought Joshua was a vicious cheat who mocks his opponents in the ring? Or is he a dull, lifeless robot? I'm confusedreggaereggae wrote:Well done. Seriously, people need to make their mind up why they hate him so much before banging on about him like he's just stolen their girlfriend

He wasn't talking about Joshua in that post, so what are you on about?the_doctor wrote:I thought Joshua was a vicious cheat who mocks his opponents in the ring? Or is he a dull, lifeless robot? I'm confused![]()

Apologies in advance for the pedantry, but didn't the gorilla comments come much later in the build-up for the Thriller in Manila? I thought Ali & Frazier were relatively friendly in the build-up to the FOTC?Counter-puncher wrote:I remember the first time I saw the FOTC, knowing nothing of the needle and so on

The problem is all too often it's the reverse, endless parping about what they'll do to their opponent, and then a dull lifeless fight.reggaereggae wrote:Well done. I don't care what happens in the press conference and build up, so long as the fight is exciting. Never mind all the cock teasing, it's the blowjob that counts. In an ideal world, a great bit of cock teasing followed by a world class noshing off, but of the two, I'd settle for the latter all day long.

However when was the last big fight you actually bust a nut over??

I like silver spoon Eddie but he does get ahead of himself sometimes. First there was I am sure Quigg will beat Frampton, now Fury is an easy fight for Joshua.Stevieb8006 wrote:I don't mind AJ, but I'm on the fury train. Two of my favourite fighters in recent time, have been Pacquiao and Golovkin.
Two more respectful guys you will not find.
And often, they know the mess they are going make of their opponents and still tell us how much they think of the guy before hand.

Re: OK I confess. I'm on the AJ train.
That's an excellent question. I can't actually remember the last really big hype fight that lived up to it's billing. Froch Groves 1 was pretty damned good I suppose not an absolute classic, but definitely dramatic.reggaereggae wrote:jamesmcdonnell wrote:The problem is all too often it's the reverse, endless parping about what they'll do to their opponent, and then a dull lifeless fight.reggaereggae wrote:

great analogy and for many fights you are right. Quigg-Frampton was such an event. 12 rounds of non commitall foreplay but no money shot and you wouldn't watch it again.
However when was the last big fight you actually bust a nut over??

I always thought Ali was a stoppage waiting to happen. Then he eventually got stopped by Holmes, so I guess I was right!Fat Git wrote:Once you have seen a few heavyweight derailments (basically - all of them) you stop boarding the effing train and go by car.![]()
Joshua is a KO waiting to happen, because that is what happens to all of them in the end unless they get out of it at the right time, and
only one - well, two, ever did that... smart guys that they were... (Marciano and Gene Tunney).
