He was ok boxer ,he was great fights with Holyfield, with Valuev he was stolen from the judges!
Those fights with Holyfield were not great fight by any stretch of the imagination. They were ugly. Holyfield was shot by then anyway.
You would be hard pressed to find anyone who got as many breaks as Ruiz did:

No way he should have got a draw against a shot Holyfield in their 3rd fight. He lost convincingly.
He should have lost to Kirk Johnson but Johnson self destructed.
No way he should have got the decision against Golota. That was horrible.
He lost to Toney, only to have the result reversed.

All Ruiz would do was throw a punch and grab. Over and over. He knew that way the rounds would be close and he would have a chance.

He probably was not the worst, but he was awful.

Holyfield/Ruiz has to be the only trilogy with every official result being wrong. Ruiz won the first fight, Holyfield knocked him out in the second fight and Holyfield won the third fight.

Aye. Ruiz won all of his big fights spoiling, holding, crying foul and generally cheating. In his rematch with Holyfield he got hooked to the belly and laid on the floor holding his testicles for ten minutes. Holyfield was docked a point by the Puerto Rican ref Joe Cortez for the legal bodyshot that should have scored a KO win. The next round the Puerto Rican Ruiz hit Holyfield square in the balls and Cortez did nothing.

Every time Kirk Johnson hit him to the body there Ruiz was, diving to the floor.

It was hilarious to see him lose to a middleweight. Jones stayed outside and made it a boxing match, and because John Ruiz had no boxing skill he was made to look a fool. Then he lost to another middleweight. Strange how he never called out David Tua.

Awful fighter, awful champion. Without the Don King connection he would never have had a title shot, nevermind a decade-long reign as champion of the WBA 'B' class division.
