Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 16 - Steve Collins vs Reggie Johnson
I havent watched the Johnson fight yet but just finished watching his fight with Cummings, fun little fight with both guys down in the opener, although a punch did help Collins down it did look more of a balance thing, the right hand that put Craig down though was a peach , the ref did seem to step in maybe a tad early but it did look as if the writing was on the wall for Cummings

113-113 on my card,Johnson landed the better punches and seem to hurt Collins a little at times putting him on the back foot but Steve outworked him down the stretch

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 16 - Steve Collins vs Reggie Johnson
Collins did have three very hard, learning fights and this is one of them. He definitely improved from the fights with McCallum, Johnson and Kalambay, all of which I had Collins losing (the fights with Johnson and Kalambay are supposed to be controversial but I don't see the fuss).
Not watched this fight recently but I recall Johnson being sharp and catching Collins' chin a bit too high, a bit too often.
Collins and Johnson were in a few fights that were a bit close to call. But I have no issue with the scoring. What matters is it factored in the development of Collins, who went on to have a successful - if anticlimactic - title reign where he filled out as a 168-pounder.

Re: 52 fight challenge: Week 16 - Steve Collins vs Reggie Johnson
I've listened to a lot of Steve Collins in recent times and he loves going on about tactics and game plans.
He say's he was perhaps not as skilled as many of the guys he shared a division with (and he shared a division with many outstanding fighters) but he could beat them with the right plan.
I always had him down as a warrior and he admits himself he wasn't the slickest technician.
But I also don't think he was any kind of master tactician either.
He was a good fighter, no doubt, but he set a high work rate, had bundles of heart, a good chin and fought like a warrior, I've never watched a Collins fight and left thinking, "he really out-thought him in there."
He outfought guys who were perhaps more skillful, but I honestly can't see that it was down to meticulous planning by his team.
