the ibf ratings are pretty silly ..but in an ideal world the winner of Parker v Takam would fight the winner of Pulev v Chisora...that way you'd have a fairly legit (at least in Ibf land) number 1 contender.

however im guessing it'll be the worst ranked fighter...presumably Eric Molina or maybe even Breazeale

Out of the people listed Stiverne is the best option.
Parker, Breazeale and Miller are all future champions and matching them with Joshua yet is potentially killing a big fight in future.

Stiverne is a former world champion so he brings that experience to the fight and he's coming off a 10 round fight win so he'll be in the right mind set to give Joshua a good fight on the night but I see it as a defence for Joshua and putting a first title defence victory on his record

It would be an easy sell- yes Dereck has little chance, which Hearn will like, but his name is known and you know he talks so will create hype and PR. Joshua has a big following in the casual fan world and they don't know enough about boxing and will just love the hype = PPV buys = a self satisfied Eddie Hearn jacking off with a finger up his aris when he downloads the PPV buys figures...
If I was Joshua, I'd tell Chisora to swivel. He offered him a fight and he flat turned it down because he 'didn't have anything he wanted'.

My response to Chisora would be "You have nothing to offer me, go earn your shot".

He is, he's fighting Pulev. The issue was Chisora wanted 50% of the money, he didn't flat ot refuse, they just couldn't agree; if Chisora beat AJ, people would just say he got exposed, Chisora would get little credit.

"BREAKING: @anthonyfjoshua will make first defence of IBF world title against Dominic Breazeale on June 25."

Interesting fight considering he's 6"7 but aside from that, another American who will get blasted away under 3 rounds...

He chose to fight Pulev for 20% of the money. So it can't possibly been about money. In the unlikely event of Chisora winning that fight, I think he would get all the plaudits he deserved, but come on, it just wouldn't happen.

FML. I'd be surprised if it lasted the opening round. What a waste of time. I will NOT be buying that fight.

Pulev has been around enough that Chisora would get credit for beating him, it's not just about the money, it's that the money is really the only reason to take the fight, when is the last time you saw someone big up Tony Tompson for stopping Price?

When I heard Breazeale was on the three man shortlist - I had the feeling.... We are going to get all the hype.... "he is America's Anthony Joshua.... bigger, looks the part, decoarated amateur".

For Joshua's progression I feel both Stirvene and Molina would have been better options, but both of these were Wilder leftovers - so I can see why Sky wanted this one.

I have two words about this fight - Michael Grant.

Breazeale is awful.

Well David Price wasn't world champion, and Tony Thompson had just got done for drugs, so many wouldn't. But there is a difference between Joshua's progress and the progress that Price made.

Agreed Pulev is the more accomplished fighter than Joshua, but if you was to put Pulev and Joshua in the ring, I'd fancy Joshua to come out on top. If Chisora beat Joshua it'd be much bigger news that beating Pulev, especially domestically.

I agree, but think AJ MAY prove to be more Grant-esq at some point and when one looks back at his career.

You sure about that? I don't think there is anyone who they could have picked that was both available and in the IBF top 15 that would have been deemed acceptable and wouldn't have been considered a push-over.

It's quite easy to see from the quotes below that there are plenty of people who have plenty of problems with any of the possible options and would complain regardless. Now, I'm not for one second saying that Breazeale is a top class opponent and I expect Joshua to win comfortably, but I think the lack of options reflects more on the IBF and the overall lack of quality in the division.

A guy who was stopped inside a round by Arreola and knocked down 5 times and stopped by Wilder.

He's a part time school teacher who's looking like he's had 2 World Title shots in his last 3 fights.

This is why we shouldn't have champions who learn on the job ...

Neither was Joshua when they were going to fight, Joshua really hasn't faced anyone on the level of Tony Tompson yet. And he just got done for drugs, it's not like before that he was showered with praise.

This one was me! You just can't help it though, can you? It was always going to be a disappointing opposition. The quick turnaround and lack of opposition was only going to leave us with B/C level fighters. I think the best possible option was maybe Molina because then at least there would be a comparison to Wilder. Breazeale was possibly one of the worst options boxing wise, but that fight is easy to market, hence why they made it.

Yeah okay, granted, Joshua was not World Champ at the time, and the failed drug test was announced well after the result of the fight. Having a closer look at both's record they were pretty close in level. Maybe slightly edged by Joshua. But the profile itself would raise a win over Joshua much higher than a win over Price after 16 fights. Everyone in the country knows who Anthony Joshua is, even the non-sports fans. As far as they're concerned, he's indestructible. Whereas if Chisora beat Pulev, that would be an unknown fighter being beaten by a relatively unknown. AJ getting squashed by Chisora would make substantial waves.

I took the names out so it didn't look like I was calling anyone out

Really though, you are right. I'm not going to get majorly excited for a Joshua fight until he's in with Fury, Wilder, Povetkin etc because we already know he's above fringe world level. The next question is, is he elite level? That's the test I'm looking forward to and anyone on a level below is going to be a bit of a disappointment.

I think Braziellie is a good defence for Joshua 1st defence. He's been Olympic qualifier & unbeaten in 17/15 kos.

I'm not sure why people are angry. This was always going to happen. This was planned out as soon as Fury won the IBF belt. Fury was always going to be stripped and AJ was always going to be IBF champion fighting bums on PPV for the next couple of years.
