Aussie boxer Jeff Horn’s fight with Randall Bailey postponed after freak training accident
UPDATE: DEVASTATED boxer Jeff Horn will seek advice from Darren Lockyer and the Brisbane Broncos after suffering a severe throat injury that has derailed his immediate world title hopes.
Horn’s planned March 2 fight with Randall Bailey has been postponed after his larynx was fractured in sparring.
He will seek advice from former Australian rugby league skipper Darren Lockyer, who suffered a similar injury playing for the Broncos in 2004.
The fight may be rescheduled for April 27 at the same venue, depending on the medical advice Horn receives over the next few days.
“It sucks big time,’’ said Horn, 28, a Brisbane schoolteacher and London Olympic quarter-finalist.
“I’m just finding out from the professionals what needs to be done. The fight will have to be postponed, it’s just a matter of when it will be.’’
Horn was badly injured by a looping left hook to the throat when sparring 85kg southpaw Simon Cooper on Thursday night and has been seeking specialist advice since then.
Trainer Glenn Rushton said the freak injury would mean Horn, the No.6 contender for the world welterweight title, would not be able to spar for at least five weeks.
“Jeff was a bit flat after a trip to New Zealand for the Auckland 9s and in sparring took a big looping left hook on his windpipe,’’ Rushton said.
“Darren Lockyer suffered a similar injury playing for the Broncos and we are seeking as much information from him and from the Broncos’ medical staff.
“The No.1 priority for me is Jeff’s health and once that’s 100 per cent it is a matter of getting him back to his best as quickly as we can. Randall Bailey is a huge puncher and we can’t take any chances.’’
Horn’s promoter, former New Zealand rugby league forward Dean Lonergan, said from Auckland last night that all medical advice would need to be studied closely before the fight could be rescheduled but April 27 was the most likely option.
“We believe that Jeff is an absolute sensation and a future world champion,’’ Lonergan said. “But he won’t be stepping into the ring until he is completely fit again.’’

Is Horny really over his injury? Reading this interview it seems that he wants to protect it - To me meaning its not fully %100 healed but what do I know.http://www.smh.com.au/sport/boxing/maki ... oc2ic.html
All the best to Jeff and hope he does the job Vs Bailey.

Re: Jeff Horn suffers injury setback - fractured larynx
This is somewhat of a break through fight for Jeff Horn and a win will consolidate and perhaps advance his recent elevation to No. 5 in the world IBF and WBO rankings. In against a dangerous guy here and will need to be switched on in defence. His neck injury won't be an issue, as won't the added pressure of a home crowd. For mine Jeff breaks Bailey down over 6 to 8 rounds and can finish it there. If not, a shutout UD win.
