I lived in Colchester at uni, rough as arseholes, and a horrible place to boot, bunch of squaddies picked on my mate Sean Worrell, 5 foot 1 black guy, called him a coon and his mate a Paki, group of 5 squaddies started pushing them around.

Happily, unbeknownst to them, Sean was a serious martial artist (I didn't even know before this incident) - he'd studied his final dans in Tae-Twan-Do in Korea - and proceeded to kick unholy crap out of 4 of them, (after the required warning) - breaking one's jaw, shattering the ribs of another, and knocking two of them unconscious, the 5th one legged it. He got arrested but not charged as he was outnumbered 5-1 during the altercation, and there was racial provocation, and gave them fair warning of the can of whup-ass he was about to open on them.

That may explain the unlikeliness of such an event - even if they couldn't fight, I'm fairly sure 4, fit army guys could pull a dwarf to the floor and kick him! this is pure bvllshit.... No, but the other guy with him was my mate PJ, who at the time was one of my best mates, I Sean himself wasn't one to really give it the big one - he never mentioned martial arts at all, and was very quiet, it could have been a case of Chinese whispers you're right. I will readily admit I always liked the idea of racists bullies getting a kicking, or really bullies of any kind getting their just desserts.

I can believe certainly 3 people, I managed to not exactly fight off, but scare off 3 people, admittedly, they were a lot younger, and I'd already taken a bit of a kicking by that point, and they just fucked off when I managed to get off the floor they shit it and ran off, as they weren't expecting it. Obviously they were not army recruits, but then neither was I a martial artist of any kind. If someone's not really committed to the fray, they can be easily dissuaded.

As a counterpoint to that, I did witness first hand an amateur boxer at the same uni chin a load of rugby boys, one of them was pissing around with a pint glass in hand and it slipped out of his hand and smashed into the guys girlfriends face, who was sitting at the next table to them, busting her lip open, he went garratty, and just started whacking everyone at the table, it was like one of those whack-a-mole games, they stood up from the table to rush him and got whacked back. It got broken up before they really got a chance to overwhelm him, as they surely would have done, but they certainly got some group licks before it did.

Let's face it, memory is unreliable, even shortly after an event, but I can assure you I've not made up either story to fulfil some deep seated loathing of myself due to the crimes of my white brethren. My family is Irish, we're not responsible for perpetrating crimes on anyone that i'm aware of.

I look out the windows of my cottage (that I paid £120k for) and see the sea, rolling farmland, and the wild ruggedness of the moor. Two of those are within walking distance, one is a 20 minute drive or train ride away. I don't have anything more than a passing worry about crime or personal security here, although I grew up in Plymouth, where that was very different.

There's work here, and the pace if life is slower. People still chat to strangers. A thriving local live music scene, and all the mod-cons that technology has brought. Takes a while to get anywhere, but once you've visited the frozen, icy tundra of The North (y'know, Portsmouth, Brighton, That London...) why would you want to leave the Westcountry?
