Canelo's Dilemma.....

Post by caldo2025 »

I think that the sport of boxing is in great shape with Canelo as it's number one star and ambassador. Finally someone is carrying the torch that has class and humility and not making it rain by a stripper pole and hitting women. But Canelo is in a very tough spot here and the future of his reign as the sports #1 box office star depends on his decision over the next few months.

Let's face facts here, Canelo is much improved and he will fare as well as anyone could against GGG but he's just lining up for a beating. It's probably going to be ugly too and may end up ruining Canelo's career. Guys like Canelo don't ever think about being knocked out or losing by stoppage. Once it happens, it opens up a world of possibilities that boxers now have to consider. No one is ever the same after a KO.

But if Canelo finds a way out of this fight with GGG, his reputation will take a beating that is just as bad.

So let's see what you think. Is getting knocked out in a megafight by GGG less damaging to a career than ducking out of a fight? I'd seriously weigh these options if i'm Canelo. His chances of finishing that fight on his feet are slim and none.

Yeah he's in a bit of a no win situation. Get brutally KO'd or labelled a ducker.

Personally getting KO'd would be least harmful to his career and legacy. He's got some cracking wins already, getting KO'd by GGG won't detract from his wins over Cotto, Lara and Trout. If he shamefully ducks GGG he'll be forever labelled a coward and a ducker. The same way Roy Jones Jr can't shake off the ducker label after avoiding Collins and Michalczewski.

Such a shame that when Ali beat Foreman it seems like it was all for nothing.

Canelo will put up a good fight imo. He'll get stopped most likely, but let's see what happens if he gets some shots off.

I think it's more likely to be a physically damaging loss as you can imagine Canelo taking a lot of punishment before he is stopped. So yeah, health is a big one. He's got too much pride to lie down and take the paycheque but at the same time doesn't want to take a beating that would shorten his career or affect his health.

if I was him I would probably do everything I could to get out of the fight to be honest, so I can't blame him.

It's a matter of pride weighed against stupidity. Or both. That's if this fight is contracted to be at 160 Ibs. If it's contracted at 160 Canelo gets beat up plain and simple.

And here's another possibility. He might just surprise everyone and pull off a once in a lifetime upset against GGG. Not something that I'd personally bet on myself, but crazier things have happened in this sport. And we also have to remember that Canelo is an exceptional fighter who is nearly a decade younger than Golovkin. If he chooses to pass up that fight, he'll no doubt get some criticism. But there are plenty of good fighters around ( and ones that'll pop up in the near future ) that he can earn some points for beating. I'd hate to see him suffer a career thwarting beating. He's a talented athlete and a fine young man.

The problem for Alvarez is that unlike PBF he doesn't have the range to jump around the weights. If he did he could drop down to welterweight and take on a couple of the talents there waiting for Golovkin to fade a little,
North of WW the only big fight out there is Golovkin. Alvarez is caught between a rock and another risible mismatch.

At Canelo's level, if he is not willing to take on all comers, he should step down. That goes for any fighter at his level. He is a top guy. He needs to face GGG or forfeit his belts. If a guy of his caliber is thinking about sparing himself a beating more so than dishing one out, then maybe he should reevaluate his career.

Exactly. Fans expect the same out of all Boxers that they expect out of Canelo right now with GGG. When you're at the top you gotta fight the other guys at the top. That's just the way she goes.

So what's the deal now with the enforcing of this fight? Is there a time limit? Purse bids? What happens?

Interesting to see the unanimous opinion of posters as to a ko result.
I suppose canelo has to decide what weight division he is. Given that he is young and a huge drainer he should fit in to middleweight fine.
Anything wrong with a warm up fight at 160?

Yeah there's a lot wrong with it. GGG is his mandatory, and has been deserving of a shot at THE Middleweight Championship for going on 3 or 4 years now. Enough's enough. Step up to the plate and fight THE MAN already.

The fight on Saturday was supposed to be that warmup fight. DLH and Canelo decided to fight a welter instead. Now it is time to follow their signed obligations.

I don't like the chances of this fight getting made.

De La Hoya says Canelo has upper-hand in Golovkin negotiations

Already sounds like DLH is going to pull some unfair shit during negotiations. Hope they can come to an agreement, but I'm not holding my breath.

Since when can a 25 year old not recover from a knockdown to a top opponent? They do change fighters, but not always for the worse.

As a GGG fan, i'm ok with that. Canelo deserves the upper hand in negotiations completely. Canelo has the lopsided amount of fanbase and the most risk with accepting a fight at 160. I don't even think it would be unheard of to have a Floyd/Challenger type of split for this one quite honestly. GGG wants the belts and he wants the fans that will tune in to see Canelo. He's gonna have to be ready to accept a lopsided split in this one to make it happen. The only thing I wouldn't agree to if i were him was for anything under 160. He should stick to those guns because it seems that the commission is on board with this and ready to stop the 155 nonsense with the Middleweight Division.

Somehow though, I can see the governing body stepping aside if Canelo signs on to fight Floyd. That's the only factor that could stick it to GGG hard. Floyd might do that just to stop GGG's star from shining any brighter than it has.

A funny thing happened to GGG in that last fight against Wade. The fans showed up and the fans saw a quick fight and a knockout and LOVED IT. Just like they used to do for Mike Tyson. This train is just going to get faster. GGG's knockouts are starting to become an event in themselves. Funny how it's happening too.

I'm with you. I expect Canelo to receive the lion's share. However, it should be a fair split... nothing perverse. And forget about the catch weight. Canelo's a big boy now. A unification bout needs to happen at the proper weight.
