GGG v Alvarez sparring
GGG v Alvarez sparring
GGG hurt Alverez in sparring. A boxing insider who was present at the Los Angeles gym on the day when Gennady Golovkin and Canelo Alvarez sparred has shared his account of what happened: “Golovkin hurt Canelo twice – first liver and then head. Canelo came out strong trying to hurt him right away. Then Golovkin got him with a nice liver shot and then a few head shots that made Canelo spar a lot more gently. It was awkward in the room. It was Golovkin’s first real sparring in America. He was just here from Germany. I think Canelo (then age 21) was just getting ready for Afonso Gomez in Los Angeles (TKO 6 in September 2011).”
It calls to mind the Lennox Lewis vs Andrew Golota sparring session years before Lewis defended the WBC Heavyweight title by first round knockout against Golota in Atlantic City in 1997. Before their fight Lewis didn’t publicly talk about his previous sparring against Golota with the media but I learned from an insider Lennox had his way with Golota in sparring and that when he “turned up the heat Golota couldn’t handle it.” Of course the same pattern transferred to their actual fight which was a one-sided affair. Sparring can reveal nothing – depending on the physical conditions of each boxer or their motivations on that particular day – or it can reveal a lot. By the way Canelo and his team are so very carefully handling this situation of accepting a fight against Golovkin it seems that this infamous Golovkin sparring session with Canelo has had a profound effect on Canelo. Canelo has a memorable first hand experience on just how challenging and difficult it is to compete with Golovkin inside the boxing ring. — By Scoop Malinowski

Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
I know that Lamar Russ, who was together with them in camp, suggested that GGG dominated and that he doesn't think a fight would be competitive. Canelo has obviously gotten better, although I think GGG has too, and he seems to consistently receive generous cards from the judges.
Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
I think Golokin has improved more then Alvarez, though Alvarez has had higher level fights. Golokin has never come out of 3rd gear.crusader wrote:I know that Lamar Russ, who was together with them in camp, suggested that GGG dominated and that he doesn't think a fight would be competitive. Thats a link to the article Doug Fischer wrote on the Golovkin/Alvarez sparring session back in 2011, its 3 pages and has a few photos to boot. Interesting read.

Very interesting stuff indeed.
If they do fight, I think it's going to be a thriller, a real war, can't see Canelo giving ground, and that means he's in the firing line.
Please god let this fight happen, if it doesn't it's another nail in the coffin for my love of the sport.

Sanchez talks garbage a lot of the time. Wouldn't trust his word on it.
Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
To be honest, although it will be an exciting fight.... I don't give Alvarez much of a shot. I cannot see him hurting GGG (big difference KO'ing Khan to hurting GGG) and he doesn't have the movement or angles that might give GGG's straight style much issues. Infact, style wise I can only see a straight shoot out between the two, and I can only see one winner.
Call me mad, but I actually think Cotto's boxing brain and angles might give GGG more problems than Alvarez (although again, can only see one winner).
Infact, whilst off course I want GGG and Alvarez too fight next, if that fight does not happen then personally I wouldn't mind seeing Alvarez vs Cotto 2.... that fight was a lot closer than people have credited.

Interesting read. Honestly think Canelo is easy work for Golovkin and he'll be out of there within 8. Just hope they get it on

Yes, but Cotto is just too small, it's a fight he can only survive, not win. He looked dwarfed in the ring, he's a filled out 140 lber like Khan. It's just not a winnable fight, he can't hurt Canelo, or engage with him toe to toe, and hasn't the reach or style to keep Canelo off him for more than a few rounds.stujones wrote:To be honest, although it will be an exciting fight.... Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
James,
He did pretty well vs Canelo in fight 1. I thought the fight was very close and I can see why Roach thought his charge won. Was never in much trouble, just Canelo's strength told more towards the end - but a couple of rounds of sticking to sensible boxing and Canelo would have had too much to catch up.
Assume you mean against GGG, yes I agree I think GGG will catch up with him eventually - but Cotto has the skills and style to cause some problems early. He is a good bit faster than Canelo (particularly early) and has some excellent survival skills, but yes.... can only see 1 winner.... however, I think Cotto has the talent to give other fighters the blueprint at beating GGG.
However, I think GGG will smash Canelo to pieces.... it will be as one sided as GGG vs Murray - just don't see how Canelo can take a round vs GGG. He isn't quick enough or have the boxing brain. He is not a monster at Middleweight, so I don't think his power will trouble GGG. He comes at you and this will suit GGG.

Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
Cotto is a much better boxer then Alverez, better technique, but remember Margarito, I know that Margarito cheated, but the pressure gave Cotto trouble and Golokin brings it.stujones wrote:To be honest, although it will be an exciting fight.... Would have loved to see Golokin v Froch in Britain, see how Froch's iron chin stands up to Golokin and Ward for his movement, skill, tricks, inside work and the way he nullify's his opponents work, plus he is a lot bigger then Golokin. can't see anyone at Golokins weight or below giving him real trouble, unless Mayweather fights him at catchweight.

Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
so they both landed heavily, both felt the others power, and both took the punches well. A good sign for a great fight.
I wouldn't right off Canelo so fast - GG is a monster, but compared to the quality Alavarez will bring, the great man has been knocking over a bunch of also rans and journey men: no-one close to his level at all.
Canelo has the heavy punch, skills, pure winning instinct and great chin to give him all he can handle.
Let's just pray it happens, because it's shaping up to be the super fight boxing is lonnnng over due.

When was the last time a superfight happened between two guys in their primes, at WW or above? Mosley DLH?

Not quite a superfight I'd say. Alvarez is a bigger star than Froch and Ward put together were. An equally good matchup though.johnswan1 wrote:Froch-Ward?jamesmcdonnell wrote:]MightyWarrior wrote:so they both landed heavily, both felt the others power, and both took the punches well. Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
Me either, I think people are letting their annoyance with Canelo cloud their judgement a little. He has good boxing skills, a decent boxing brain, and is tough and determined, even if he's outskilled a little, which I think he will be, and a little outpowered too, I think he's got enough to keep GGG honest. I don't see Canelo being a cakewalk at all. If GGG does crush him with ease, it says more about GGG's excellence than Canelo's lack of ability. Come fight night, GGG will probably be outweighed a handful of pounds.MightyWarrior wrote:so they both landed heavily, both felt the others power, and both took the punches well. Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
Meh, as a very young man Alvarez was hit with good shots and came out firing - hardly an indication one way or another of how the fight will go.
I think this fight will go ahead but if it doesn't I think Golden Boy will be at fault not Canelo. When he says he will put on the gloves and fight right now I believe that he means it.
It isn't as simplistic a GGG win as people seem to think. Alvarez has yet to come unstuck in a firefight.

Did Canelo take the punches that well? I get the impression that he was hurt multiple times, while GGG wasn't hurt at all. Going by Fischer's account he also showed the stamina issues that I believe he still has.MightyWarrior wrote:so they both landed heavily, both felt the others power, and both took the punches well. Yep, and Canelo's camp haven't exactly seemed keen to make the fight, so I'm not sure they share your confidencecrusader wrote:Did Canelo take the punches that well? Re: GGG v Alvarez sparring
Sanchez is a grass, always spouting how GGG dominated this guy or that guy 'in sparring'.
They brought Canelo in as a smaller, faster guy to practice with - now suddenly it's become Rocky vs Apollo settling their differences behind closed doors.
I like GGG, have championed him since he turned pro with universum, but he's really got to fight someone now and his shitty team need to pull their finger out and get some cash on the table to lure the big names in. But instead they talk rot about Gennady fighting anyone at 154 to 168 , but making zero effort to get the bouts.
I don't blame GGG, I blame his team. All GGG has ever really said is that he wants to unify and that's what he should stick to.
